While unsafe weight levels vary with conditions, most notably airport altitude, temperature, and atmospheric pressure, any competent pilot would take those factors into account and load the plane accordingly before taking to the air. (If the plane made it into the air at all.)

I prefer it the hostess’ way … Serves ’em right for trying to pile so much excess into their luggage !!

It was the host of thanksgiving dinner who is at fault. Forcing them to take home all those leftovers.

When my wife and I went on our honeymoon, we had to take a puddle jumper from one island to another.
Before boarding the pilot asked each passenger how much they weighed so he could seat us appropriately.

“Weight and Balance” … Critical flight parameters. These small operators generally weigh everything and everyone, not just ask.

I was on a turboprop flight once where the flight attendant announced, “We are just over the safe weight limit; unless one of you wishes to voluntarily transfer to another flight, we will have to randomly choose one of you to take another flight.”
