There was a line from Ian Flemings ‘Goldfinger’ where Goldfinger (the bad guy) is ridiculing James Bond’s cigarette smoking habit (Bond smoking upwards of 70 cigarettes a day)
    like this:
‘….and your habit of smoking is the most unnatural habit of all. can you imagine a cow standing over a weed that is on fire and breathing in the smoke purposely?’

I am quoting loosely and not word-for-word accurate, but that’s the just—-that stuck with me a long time, that comment from the evil, bad guy

Tobacco first used as a ‘chaw’. Imagine wrapping paper around it and setting fire to it was, in their minds, an improvement – less messy.

I often wonder who was the first person to get syphilis or gonorrhea and how they got it to then pass it along.

Or raw oysters (though I’m glad they did).

Take the berries off the bush. Remove the fleshy covering to extract the seeds. Burn the seeds for a while, then grind them up. Pour boiling water over them. Throw the ground seeds away and drink the water. Or go to Starbucks.

Thx for this. I have n-e-v-e-r understood why people smoke. I guess they don’t care that they stink. I can’t be next to anyone smoking… the odor is overwhelming.

The answers to most of these questions is very hungry early foragers who lacked our modern squeamishness. Shellfish and crustaceans lived right up to the water’s edge.

Lobster used to be a poor person’s food.

Bob Newhart recorded a very funny routine about the introduction of tobacco to civilization.
