    You bought the right thing. The word ‘right’ being used in the sense of it being the thing you intended to get as opposed to something edible.

    The key to good fruitcake is the rum. You drink the rum and forget to make the cake.

    I used to think that until many years ago an editor for Bon Appetit magazine, who claimed he loathed fruitcake, wrote a piece about getting a fruitcake from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, TX and how wonderful it was. For all I know he was paid by the bakery to do the piece, but I bought one anyway. They are wonderful; and I have been getting them there since. They don’t put that nasty tasting citron in their cakes which is what most people don’t like.

    My fruitcake recipe is delicious. It calls for making it a couple of months in advance, then storing it. Periodically, you take it out of the container & pour some rum or Southern comfort on it. Pack into the container. Repeat every 2 to 3 weeks. When Christmas comes, take it out and serve. Everyone loves it.

    I get so friggin tired of people putting down fruit cakes. Some are bad I’ll agree, but a nice moist one can’t be beat. And if they are too dry, soak them in rum for a month or so. That’ll pep it right up!
