Anybody who declaws a cat should have their own nails ripped out with pliers.

They just declaw the front 2 paws, they can still fight with their back claws though not as effective.

Had a fingernail cut off once when I had an infection under it. No pain killer. No fun.

Really…. Tell the 90 lb Akita my declawed Siamese used to beat the carp (sic) out of.

    1) people who declaw cats just to protect their furniture do not deserve the privilege of living with a cat – the only excuse for declawing is extreme aggressiveness
    2) if you do declaw, the cat should be kept indoors, as it can no longer climb trees to safety when threatened by an opponent it cannot fight

In reality, declawing is amputating the toe at the first knuckle. A barbaric practice to which I am vehemently opposed.

Amen. I once had a discussion with a coworker about the ethics of declawing. She asked, “Don’t you care about your furniture?” To which I replied, “I care more about my cat.”

@plods with beer – …and try to trim the back claws on a cat and you’ll find out how “not as effective” it is, too. Right? Or, be in the clutches of your kitty when he’s in a “playful” mood and try to keep your arm from being ripped off. Trust me, back claws are effective to rip out guts. Rabbits do the same thing as cats that way (I know from experience). And yes, my cat doesn’t know what outdoors is except from behind the window screen.

I’ve owned about 10 cats in my 66 years. Never declawed one of them. The scratches typically don’t require stitches and the scars go away in about 6 months.

Ya know, must EVERY reference to declawing be met by the litany of horror-stricken rants on what it entails, and the dreadful punishment that ought be handed out to its perpetrators? I mean, I happen to agree, but get off the effin soapbox for once, huh?

I imagine that the declawing would be done for the protection of elderly owners,as most of the characters here are 60+.

I inherited a declawed cat. It never seem to bother her. She would bring us gifts all the time: birds, lizards, and river rats. Yup…the kind that was almost as big as she was! The only time she brought us rats was because we went somewhere for the weekend and did not take her!

This is like arguing politics or religion. And as happens, some are uninformed or misinformed.
I’ve owned both and all were gloriously happy and always indoors.
