Babies and puppies are both quite cute, but underneath the soft, cuddly exteriors lie the fearsome hearts of competitors. Well, not really. When a new baby joins the household, Sophie the dog is initially irritated, but eventually comes to see the baby, Doug, as the asset he is: a better way to get snacks. Though the baby is still hogging precious attention, and has a tendency to pull ears and be a general nuisance, a begrudging friendship forms between the two rivals. Watch the mischief unfold in Brian Anderson’s Dog Eat Doug.

We had a German Shepherd that did the same thing in OUR baby pool. When she would get in it, there was precious little room for my sister and me to sit, much less play! I love this comic for all the trips down memory lane it sends me on. Thanks Brian!

It’s a bit too late to abort that mission.

When I throw a stick, my lab loves to run the length of our dock and jump as far as she can before landing in the lake.

My lady friend bought 2 pools this year, a small one for her granddaughter, and a big one for her St. Bernard.

We were taking care of our friends’ lab one April and our pond still had a thin sheet of ice out in the middle (can you see where this is going??). Well, that lab took one look at the water and bounded down there full speed and ker-SPLAT landed as far out as he could manage despite our warnings. Well, it didn’t take long for him to come back in and the next time he stayed with us he never went near the pond even though it was warm.
We also had a Newfoundland who wouldn’t go in my brother-in-law’s pond, so my husband took him out to the end of the diving board and rather pushed him over. That dog hung his front paws around the edges of the board until he could hang on no longer and went THUMP into the water and sank. He was down so long I though he would never come up, but come up he did and we could never keep him out of water after that.
Our St. Bernard wouldn’t go near the water.
Our current lab won’t go near the water, either, and we haven’t pushed the issue.
Dogs are too funny.

Just got back from a swim. It’s annoying, we have company and our lab believes that it is her duty to save us and swims for us while barking shrill penetrating barks and then she gets in front of us to interrupt our stroke, believing full well that if she doesn’t we will drown.
