Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

You cant sleep well next to a hungry tiger and hungry tigers cannot sleep at all when they know there is tuna in the kitchen.

It’s realy not good to sleep beneath a hungry tiger. Mayonnaise is too fat! The expression of Calvin in the third panel is great!

Make sure you use a medium amount of salt but lots and lots of pepper.

People who sleep with hungry tigers find themselves on the menu.
Hobbes (looking at a menu): “Let’s see. I’ll have the Calvin sandwich.”

Good thinking Calvin, sleeping with a hungry tiger not such a good idea… feeding the tiger on the other hand, a great one… Isn’t that right Hobbes???

Hobbs stomach can’t growl; it’s filled with nothing but foam bits and cotton waste. Calvin is obviously going to eat Hobbs’ sandwich for him. Which, I suspect, was the plan all along.

You people are overlooking the obvious. How easy will it be sleeping next to a tiger with tuna breath?

Why do you wish you had a dog Calvin? Hobbes would just threaten to eat the dog instead of you.

I’ve learned not to sleep under a fastidious Siamese whose litterbox was not cleaned out last night.
I had a dream that it was raining, and woke up to see a black tail and beige butt sticking out above the windowsill.
True story.
The cat lived, but always had a clean litterbox at bedtime.

I’m sure Calvin will have a sandwich too, so they’ll both have tuna breath and thus won’t be able to smell each other.

I like tuna straight from the package (those foil pouches, not cans), without mayo, celery, or the rest of that stuff.

Hey, Calvin, Dick Tracy could use some tuna right now.

After the onions and black olives, I would like to suggest to add some tomatoos and mushrooms. That’s what we can call a “REAL TUNA SANDWHICH”.

Love Calvin’s face in the 3rd panel.
Glad I’m not Calvin. I never liked tuna - but I do like heavily peppered salmon.

“Calvin & Rover” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Never would have worked. “Calvin & Spot”? Nope. “Calvin & Lassie”? Never.
It had to be a tiger.

It will be obviously better than being eaten by the tiger.

Haven’t made any in years, but back when I did used this combo of ingredients for tuna sandwiches: tuna (of course), chopped hard-boiled egg, grated cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, chopped pickle, plentiful black pepper and lots of mustard (not mayo).

mwachowski - It goes back to the very first panels that Watterson did for this strip. Calvin finds this tiger and asks his dad what to feed it who, of course, doesn’t know. Turns out that Hobbes is partial to tuna sandwiches. If Hobbes didn’t / wouldn’t eat Moe, the school bully, I doubt that he’d eat Calvin - a smaller, less appealing target. Plus, it’s Calvin that provides a home and family for Hobbes. Why bite the hand that feeds you? Literally.
I love all the tuna sandwich gourmets that commented on this strip! I concur will just about all of them! Tuna, mayo, dried onions, pepper, sweet pickle relish or diced dill pickles, olives, mushrooms, a slice of tomato… WOW - now I’m really hungry for a tuna sandwich and didn’t bring one with me to work. Nuts!
treBsdrawkcaB said, about 1 month ago
Calvin’s response could have been to - grudgingly - make Hobbes’ tuna sandwich and then “serve it outside so that we don’t stink up the house and wake Mom & Dad” and, when Hobbes goes outside for his sandwich, lock the door behind him.
Sweet dreams, Calvin!
grazer said, about 1 month ago
I seriously doubt if Hobbes would have eaten Calvin without making him take a bath first—not an easy task in itself.

Loved this strip! And all the comments. I want to try mushrooms and olives in tuna sometime. I agree with Hobbes. Some of the ready-made “spreads” are just a little tuna swimming in mayo. If I have nothng else on hand, I just use tuna, pickle relish, and enough mayo to make it hold together. With more planning I’ll included hard boiled eggs and celery.
