…meaning Schot thinks the iPad is going to be a bust like the Apple Newton? Or the iPad will clean up competition (if any) or dominate? Which way is this ‘toon leaning?

He’s eating BOOKS! Will we lose all our books to the new technology?

OH! It can store all those books so you can have a whole library at your finger tips.

    SIGH….

I love the printed page, the smell of a new book, the feel of adventure after midnight with only one light shining on the page…….

I pad = $500 Hardcover best sellar = $25 Need to buy 20 books to bread even. I read maybe 4 year. Takes 5 years to break even. Tech is old in 2 years. Bad investment. I will take the real book every time.

The Kindle is only $249 in the “cheap” version, you can download some books for free, a lot are ten bucks, some are MUCH more! But the IPad is more than just a book reader. I still prefer the printed page.

I read 4 maybe 5 books a month. I stick ‘em in the case so I can re-read them. Over and over again.

Which reminds me. I need a new copy of “The Foundation Trilogy”. Anyone know if that is still inprint?

    No, I lie. There’s a 2008 edition!

Bruce, I picked up hard copies about 4-5 yrs ago. I think it was through Barnes and Noble. Take your choice, them or Amazon. You can get used copies at a discount price.

Thanks for the direction, I’ll be browsing the aisles at Barness&Nobles (I may order it). The copy I have is a bound edition with all three novels in it. If I have to buy three I will……Thanks again.

Trilogy…Wimp! Buy the whole hundred of them!

My Sony reader allows me to read and reread and reread and, by the way, I never have to search around for the book, it’s right there.

    Readers are great!

LOL, RV……..when the lights are off due to hurricane Ida, your battery died 2 days ago will you then be glad you “bought the book”?

It’s like collecting ceramic angels. I enjoy it more than I would a “reader” though I do see the advantage.

uhhhhh…batteries are like DEAD, dude. No juice so how ya gonna charge them and forget trying to buy some. But really, it’s all a matter of opinion and what each one prefers to do. At some point I might just get one…….and hide when I use it so no one wants to rip me off…….hate to have to shoot someone over a stupid reader.

And who is going to steal a book fer crying out loud?

Actually, with the virtual ink readers, the batteries last for days and days because once they set the page the page just stays and there is no drain on the battery..

I generally get about three days of reading out of a charge. But then I listen to music that is also stored on the SD card that plugs into the reader while I’m reading, so that burns more electrijuice.

It’s not an “either/ or” proposition Bruce. I listen to digitally downloaded music, Cassette tapes and Lp records but that doesn’t mean I’m not looking at going to the Jeff Beck concert too!

The medium is only the message if you let it be so.

And, I suppose i could read in bed without having to keep the book “open” so I could keep my hands under the covers if I like had a stand to set it on……..ya think?

Virtual ink reader? Who makes a good one? I know it’s not either or.

I bought a truck with free sirrius radio for 6 months. After the free period I found out that the fee would be $150/yr. nope, nope, nope not gonna do that so I bought an ipod to plug into the system.

One day the printed page (my preference) will be obsolete. I will have gotten a reader by then. You guys enjoy them now. By the time I get one the tech will be better and cheaper…like with 8-track/cassette/CD tech or betamax/vhs/dvd/dvr tech - by the way blueray is getting affordable now.

really it’s all about the money. Limited income=limited options.

But, two comments come to mind. What, me worry? and Don’t worry, be happy! ;0))

Sony (although the Kindle is also a virtual ink device) (and “virtual ink” isn’t the correct name but I’m too lazy to look up the right one.)

As to affordability, when I bought mine I got 100 books with it (they cost $1.99 each IIRC) and paid $300 for the reader. Early adopter, me? I acutally had a soft spot for this technology because I tried to start a business making these about 12 years ago. I waited until the price came down to finally buy one.

Reading in bed with hands below the covers…. Uh… yeah, I guess. My reader came with a “hard cover” which I can use to prop the reader up in place or take off when I put the reader in a plastic bag when I take it to the beach.

You bought an Ipod? Why? The other mp3 players are just as good for music and you’re not constrained to buying content from Apple. The “leased music” paradigm is far superior to $.99/song IMHO. Especially if you’re going to compare it to satellite radio.

Best thing is to get Pandora on your PDA/Cell phone and then plug it into your external jack on your car radio and play music of your preferred genre for nothing! (assuming you have a data plan from your cell provider)

BluRay is cheap, buy a Sony PS3 for 299 and you got yourself a BluRay player into the bargain.

Until you get the reader, perhaps you can stop with your “holier than thou” fanboy devotion to the atomic medium? Everytime a conversation about readers comes up, your all, “I like BOOKS.” As if…
