Why is it those who preach the most vile hatred (Robertson, Falwell, Phelps, et cetera) are those who feel they are the purest of Christian? What part of “judge not” and “do on to others” do people not understand? Jesus would be appalled by what people say and do in his name.

I read some short story, La Bibliotheque de Babel ( Babel’s Library) it’s about a huge library filled with books without any sense (well, books who seems without any sense) and in one part, the author mentions people who worship some of those books, they don’t understant a symbol of it, but they worship and kiss them.

Sometimes, I think Holy Books (the Vedas, the Sutras, the Coran, Bible and Torah) should only be read by smart people. But then again, what is a smart person? Usually, nobody is dumber than someone who thinks he’s smart.

    dtroutma said, 4 months ago

Hmmm, Sack also has a left handed shooter. Mixed message?

There is also a difference between intelligent and smart. As in telling soldiers to “snap to smartly” and follow the line, or “dressing smartly”, which in this country any more seems more important and valuable, than the display of intelligence.

All those “good books”, that are interpreted to preach, hate. Babel indeed.

  5. motivemagus

    motivemagus said, 4 months ago

dtroutma, nah, I think it was an artistic decision, so we followed the line from “media” to “hater,” which meant he had to aim it left (there’s a message), which meant the shooter had to be a left-hander in order to make his face visible.

Thou shalt not kill. I think that’s pretty straightforward. If you think these rules are o.k. to break, then you’re not a Christian, what your are is ‘nuts’. Plus, these extremists do nothing to promote their cause, but give their opposition more support.

You forget the flexible nature of the human mind. Even the most intelligent person can twist around logic to convince him/herself what he/she believes and/or does is right. A would be killer can convince him/herself that it isn’t just OK to kill an abortion performing doctor, but that it’s the Christian thing to do.

It reminds me of an ethical question one of my teachers posed to the class years ago: If you were in WWII Germany and had the chance to kill Adolf Hitler without giving him a fair trial, would you?

Someone who would consider killing an abortion performing doctor would likely liken the doctor to Hitler and abortion as his ongoing genocide. Once you reach that point, it’s not difficult to convince yourself the rest.

People can rationalize anything. Especially when he hears media pundits egging him on with inflammatory remarks. Like Bill O’Reilly villifying Dr. Tiller day in and day out and Rush Limbaugh saying that Obama is going to destroy the United States before Al Quaida does.

    nomad2112 said, 4 months ago

No, I’m just pointing out that Leftist thugs were the scourge of the 20th century and have done more damage and mass murder than any “Extremist Right-Wing Media” could ever inspire.

  12. Copperdomebodhi

Nomad: Everyone on your list is dead or in jail. Bill O’Reilly fans and Dittoheads are killing people today. Are we supposed to ignore them until the body count gets as high as Stalin’s?

  13. cdward

    cdward said, 4 months ago

Copperdome, Kim Jong Il’s still out there. But your point is taken. These are 1) not Americans and 2) not unique. Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini come quickly to mind.

But nomad, do not make the mistake of equating dictators with socialists. They are very different. The American left would be more closely equated with the German middle – or Denmark (well the Danes are too left for most Democrats), or – gasp! – Canada.

  14. DrCanuck

    DrCanuck said, 4 months ago

You’re almost on to something there, cd’. Anyone conversant with worldwide politics will tell you there IS NO left wing in American politics or society. You have the moderate Democrats, rightwing Republicans, and the extreme right wing semi-facists. Heck, your Democratic party is further to the right than Canada’s Conservative party! Where is your progressive party, your labour party, your socialist party, your communist party? The leftwing exists only in the fevered imagination of the right. Who represents the American people in politics?

  15. dtroutma

Explaining the difference between historical Marxist governments (dictatorships/totalitarian), and socialism, as in Scandinavian countries, and around the world, to folks that think Hitler was a “lefty”, is no longer possible. When “media leaders” mask their hatreds only enough to avoid suits or arrest, and push the envelope every day, their followers do not even tug at the leash any more, but follow.

  16. motivemagus

    motivemagus said, 4 months ago

DrCanuck is right. I work for a firm that works exclusively with executives – meaning we are, on average, extremely well-paid and working for and with people who are even better paid. I find the average person in our company (which is heavily outside the US, mostly Europe) would qualify as “Massachusetts Democrat” or even farther left, and I assure you they do not think of themselves as leftists!

We have nothing comparable to the Green Party or the European Socialists that has any real power. Even the Reform Party was more right-wing libertarian than anything truly “left.”

dtroutma, you are correct, of course, in that it might be rather difficult to educate people who confuse “Socialism” with “National Socialism” just because they share a word, but we keep trying…

  17. Jase99

    Jase99 said, 4 months ago

Nomad, your list is full of people who cared only about power. Politics were only a means to an end. They also used many of the same propaganda tactics that right wing media and the Republican leadership uses.

  18. pswhitlark

What about the extremist left-wing media (aka Obama’s media)? Those hypocrites told us that we were doing terrible when we had only 5% unemployment (that’s almost considered full employment) but now that we’re on the verge of double digit unemployment (the worst since Carter) everything is coming up roses and rainbows. Why, those who are unemployed are even having a ball now. According to them, being jobless is the best thing to ever happen to them. They also tended to ignore when a left leaning comic makes “jokes” about a conservative woman having a “slutty flight attendant” look and suggesting that it would be funny if her daughter were being raped in the stands of a baseball park where the woman was watching a game (even if it were a 20 or 30 or older woman, rape is not funny). Let a right-winger make a joke about a female democrat politician’s fashion mistake, no matter how harmless and the fur will fly.
The real hate comes from the left-wing media. Just read the words and pretend the story is being written about your favorite democrat when the story is bashing some republican or right-winger. Like most of the left, Steve Sack seems to find himself blaming the wrong people for the ills of this world.

DrC, the “socialist” GOP smear campaign has been in full swing since Obama decided to run but historically in the U.S. the “Left” was much further to that edge of politics, if you look at the post-Nixon years (or war protests, for that matter) the liberals were loud and proud, not nearly so today at least in part because of the smearing. Have to agree with you that from a global view American politics have shifted to the right, I think due to the media mogul’s influence (Murdoch Incorporated Et. Al) and what I attribute to be the most influencing factor, the introduction of the religious “right” to organized politics. Their influence is felt in nearly every aspect of U.S. culture, can’t say I think it’s an improvement. Fortunately for all of us fortunes rise and fall, GOP registered voters here now hover around 25%, only the “true believers” remain in response to the last 8 years, down from the 33% or so they carried with the War/Patriotic fervor following our Iraqi pre-emptive fiasco……also the drumbeat of fear raised by the right-wing “only the GOP can protect the public” idiocy has largely died down. Unfortunately the anti-Islamic fervor is still being sold, even tying Obama to it. More misleading of the public written large by the GOP.

pswhitless: so your position is that ignoring a stupid joke about a conservative woman qualifies someone to be a called a supporter of labour movements, workers’ rights, consumer protection, and equal rights?

That is QUITE the leap of logic. Do you even know what’s being discussed here?

A “left-wing extremist” is a little more than “someone you don’t like.”

Striper 77 must listen to O’Reily and the 700 Club, or someone even more nuts.

H.R. 1913 is anti-hate crimes, which protects even people with beliefs that seem to be like his own being persecuted (attacked, killed, intimidated by violence) for those religious beliefs, along with any possible “orientation”.

Interesting that 77 notes “voyeurism” is a crime in most states, but doesn’t seem as concerned, or note, that necrophillia is illegal in ALL states.

Even my wife said I could “look but don’t touch”- so it is a little odd that voyeurism is the biggie here.

“Let a right-winger make a joke about a female democrat politician’s fashion mistake, no matter how harmless and the fur will fly. ”

Give me a break! Republicans got down right nasty in the 90’s. How many “right-wingers” made cracks about Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno being lesbians?? How many cracks did they make about Clinton being an ice queen or Reno being homely? I recall one Republican Senator publicly referring to a teen aged Chelsey Clinton as an ugly dog. Your golden child, George W, publicly mocked a death row inmate who begged him to spare her life. Soldiers were, and still are, getting killed and maimed in Iraq thanks in part to his non-existent WMDs, yet he thought it was still fair game to make light of at a press club dinner. As for rape not being funny, I recall a previous Texas governor publicly stating that women being raped should just “lie back and enjoy the ride.” Let’s not forget the utterly uncalled for “nappy headed hoes” deboggle.

Letterman’s comment was tasteless and shouldn’t have been made, but it’s no where near as nasty and tasteless as some that Republicans have made.

I guess that means Mussolini, Tojo, Hitler, Trujillo, Pinochet, and Chiang were all NICE guys, huh?

One more thing, Idi Amin was an ultraconservative, not a leftist. He even wanted to erect a statue to Hitler.

  28. motivemagus

    motivemagus said, 4 months ago

Um, no. Hitler wasn’t a neopagan. He was generally nonreligious, because he felt religions competed with worship of him. Himmler was the neopagan.

    nomad2112 said, 4 months ago

Sorry, that is an old non-PC analysis. How ‘bout sudo-religious cult of personality not too unlike Kim Il-sung. My apologies to all of the Pagans out there.

  30. motivemagus

    motivemagus said, 4 months ago

No, nomad, my comment had nothing to do with political correctness, it had to do with historical fact. Himmler tried to introduce a Germanic pagan religion, and Hitler smacked him down for it.

A pseudo-religious cult of personality is definitely a more accurate description.
Interestingly, the German grandfather of a friend of mine was a genuine Thor-worshiper – not a Nazi, he despised them; apparently the old Norse religion still has some advocates that have nothing to do with the modern pagans.
