I’m puzzled…this isn’t a criticism of Obama for trying to promote the USA’s bid for the olympics but a thank you?
(I’ve also been puzzled by the negative reactions of some regarding his support for Chicago’s bid)

No President ever went and begged the OIC before. It’s beneath the dignity of the office.

    Well.. it WAS. :/

^ Pffft, bollocks. I don’t think it was begging.
President Lula da Silva of Brasil had also personally lobbied the IOC on behalf of Rio de Janeiro.
The US has hosted the Games 8 times before so I don’t think your president should take it as a personal afront that Chicago wasn’t selected.

Perhaps an African attempt will be the next bid to win seeing as after 2016 it will be the last continent never to have staged a games. So long as it meets the criteria, of course.

Damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. Just the kind of deal the Party of No likes to get its teeth into.

He went and tried. The problem is he is finally showing that he is not the chosen one and the world does not love him as much as he loves himself.

    ^ Au contraire.
You mistake “fear” for respect. Obama is respected and by consequence the USA itself will be. And eventually liked, too!
It seems weird that I actually fight for the US’s corner. Omgosh, does it actually mean I like the USA? Yeah, it probably does. ;-)

IMHO, South America can have this one. I mean, in my short 24-year lifespan, North America had Calgary 1988, Atlanta 1996, Salt Lake City 2002 (I mean, six years apart!) and Vancouver 2010. Europe has Albertville, Lillehammer (too young to remember the exact year), Athens 2004, Torino 2006, London 2012 and Sotchi 2014. Asia had Seoul 1988, Nagano 1998 and Beijing 2008. Australia had Sydney 2000.

    Africa had…None
    South America had…none.

    So, IMHO, they deserve it.

Don’t forget Lake Placid in 1980. But put your money on Madrid because, it’s politics.

President Obama wasn’t begging for anything. He was presenting our case for the olympics which would have benefitted the entire country. If a Republican had gone & done the same exact thing, the righ wing would be cheering it.

People said it was “beneath the dignity of the office,” for President Wilson to go to Paris after WWI & try to formulate a plan for lasting world peace, too.

omQ R, I wouldn’t say that Obama necessarily felt it was a personal affront. Rather, I think it’s the right saying that the U.S. not getting it was an affront, and it’s all Obama’s fault.

It’s not that big a deal, when all is said and done. Obama tried to get it for all the work it would create but it was a long shot at best. Going in to it those in the know knew it was between Madrid and Buenes Aires.

This shows how weak we are in political/corporate skill. There wasn’t somebody like Mitt available to stump for Chicago - one of our largest cities?

They deserve it and they can have it!! It costs a fortune to host the Olympics and the US doesn’t have that kind of money to pour into anything right now. I think the key word in the Rio decision was “Safe” i.e., Rio can provide a “safe” environment for the games.
