It’s just as I knew it. Opus did what he knew would be the right thing. There are only two thins that could happen in the final strip. Either the three ladies will come back and pick up Opus or from what I saw in the panel, Opus has already gone with Calvin and Hobbs to even greater adventures.

Why do all of my favorite cartoonists retire? The world needs humor in times like these.

Don’t cry for Opus. The clues were all there…

Remember Elvis’ visit? He said that you spend eternity where you die. So I think Opus will always be the spirit of the Animal Shelter, matching up pets with new families and comforting the unadoptable.

I guess we’ll all find out next week!

Even the most creative mind needs relief, rest, rejuvenation. I suspect, after an indeterminate time, Opus may re-emerge … somewhat altered, perhaps, but with the same spirit we all love. At least we know he’s fairly safe, for the time being …

    Calvin is gone.
    Opus is going.

But Cathy, Ziggy, And Gasoline Alley go on and on.

    There’s no justice!

Last time I felt THIS bad, I just walked out of the Vets Office, having JUST put my ol’ hound down!

    (and yer absoulutely right;

    Opus - GONE
    Calvin & Hobbs - GONE
Better or Worse - being “re-tooled”
Foxtrot - ONCE a week! (Until HE wants to “retire”!

And the “glit-zzy and dit-zzy” ones go right along!

Only thing this means to me, it’s LESS time I spend each day with a Newspaper in my hands OR on my computer at home and work!

Like jnik and sarge said, calvin and hobbes gone and now opus! We all need abit of Opus in our lives.
Will the last strip be shown on gocomics or somewhere else? Because I heard it’s not gonna be in print only on the web.

So after all these years, how ironic if someone like Steve Dallas finds the meaning of life in an empty kennel at the dog pound.

things could have been worse … we might not have had Opus and we would not have known what we missed. Now we have memories. P’rhaps we ought not be greedy.

Aw, Steve walking by the ghosts of Cutter John and crew made me choked up. :/ Remember though, “Goodnight Opus” is a BB kid’s book and he did say he intended to write more books, so maybe that’s where we’ll see Opus- get it, “goodnight”? Though I actually voted he was retiring to Wasilla in the contest.

Opus was a long time friend who you always looked forward to seeing when you felt kind of bad. He gave us joy and happiness. He will be very greatly missed in this runaway world of confusion. See ya friend till next time!!!!

Very few cartoonists have the ability to give their characters real personality and life. Charles Schultz did; Berke Breathed and Bill Watterson certainly do; and it looks as though Brooke McEldowney is on the right path. The proof of this is that so many of us actually mourn the passing of an important character, like Opus, who we have known and loved for years. Watterson ended Calvin and Hobbes in such a way that Calvin never had to grow up. Apparently Breathed is ending Opus similarly, so that we can keep remembering him at his best. If dogs, cats and the odd politician can make it to heaven, maybe velveteen rabbits and cartoon characters with real soul can make it there too. Hope so, otherwise what’s the point?

If Opus ends up as a decal, taking a leak on the back of every dratted pickup truck in the south, I’m gonna have to shoot something.

Is there a cartoon (or cartoonist) Hall of Fame? If there isn’t, there should be. The Yellow Kid, Pogo, Charlie Brown, Opus, Calvin and Hobbs, all belong there.

What about Steve Binkley, and Bill? What is their final place? Each in their own way contributed to the success.

Roger, I suggest you look up a book titled Out Of Their Minds by Clifford Simak. You’d probably like it.

Steer, try the phrase “cartoonist hall of fame” in the search engine of your choice. There are a number of cartoonist halls of fame, some for animators, some for editorials others for mixed and combined categories.

  24. Orgelspieler

Orgelspieler said, about 1 year ago

runar - Thanks for the suggestion. I don’t think I’ve read anything by Simak… too busy with Heinlein, Anderson, McKillip, and the whole Lovecraft school, when I’m not stuck with technical literature… but I’ll give it a shot.

I’m guessing he might be tackling the concept that new universes are created by authors, from a different angle from Heinlein’s “Number of the Beast”???

It’s kind of the other way around - fictional characters manifesting themselves in the real world - hence the title. It predates Who Censored Roger Rabbit by about twenty years.
