Non Sequitur has received four National Cartoonists Society divisional awards, the most prestigious in cartooning. It is the only comic strip to win the coveted award in its first year of syndication and the only one to ever win in both the best comic strip and best comic panel categories.

In oklahoma we say that Spring isn’t official, until we’ve had our first tornado, but then again last year it was on Feb 10, so well nevermind.

A friend who lived in New England told me that Winter doesn’t really end until the last snow has melted.

^re: tornados. I was visiting my parents in Illinois last Christmas, and we had tornados on December 26.

Okay this is still a bit obscure to me. But I am fairly sure this occasion calls for:
Beer!
(Please drink responsibly, and use a designated typer.)

I’m from New England, I’ve never head of truck day being the celibration of ending of Winter….

Wouldn’t anyone love to be in Vancouver right now? High of 7 celsius today (44 fahrenheit), and 9 (48) tomorrow… It’s -16 (3) here in Ottawa this morning… Ugh… Spring can’t come fast enough for me…

The Vancouver Olympics are starting to sound a lot like the Calgary Olympics of some years back, when they had problems with dust blowing over the ski runs. I think temperatures made it up to something like 60 F that year… while we in Chicago were having cold and snow (just like this year)…

Old joke common to cold country, but there’s a place I frequent in Wyoming where they say they have only two seasons - winter and the 4th of July.

I knew a guy in Edmonton who started wearing shorts on the 1 day of April and didn’t stop until November 1 - no mater what the weather was like.
For me the spring kick-off as I liked to call began with the home opener of the Expos season (when they were in Montreal) - no matter what the weather was like.

Sounded to me like the tradition of hauling an old junker truck out to the middle of a frozen lake, and marking the time it falls through the ice as the first day of spring. There’s usually a betting pool to pick the day that happens. Or was it all just made up by Garrison Keillor?

Non Sequitur has become my favorite! By the way, I’m in Oklahoma and I’ve been saying it’s spring for the last two weeks. I agree with Capt Eddie….it’s a state of mind.

We sort of have “Truck Day” here in Milwaukee as well. Every year, the local paper and TV stations run photos and stories on the Brewers packing up equipment and heading for spring training. During bad years, we used to kind of hope maybe they’d STAY in Arizona.

Wiley there’s about 50 inches of snow piled everywhere here in Philadelphia. If the hope of spring is maintained by steadfastedly holding onto Truck Day then I’m all for it!

It ain’t spring in Utah until I can put my plants outside without fear of it snowing, which can be as late as mid April.
palos said, 5 months ago
Wiley – Interesting that you use the word “cartoon” rather than a “comic strip”. I associate cartoons with animation, though the dictionary offers a “comic strip” as another definition. Is “cartoon” used in the trade?
somebodyshort said, 5 months ago
Thanks for the link Wiley. They should hold a contest ( hint hint ) for the right to ride shotgun in the rig and some passes to spring training.
LuvH8 It’s still early here, but I’ve craked a cold one in your honour. Sorry I don’t have a Disignated Typist, just fat fingers.

@ palos-
“Comic strip” is the term for one particular area in the artform of cartooning. An individual edition of a comic strip is a cartoon.
Here’s a link to the National Cartoonists Society web page for the upcoming Reuben Awards division categories.
http://www.reuben.org/news/
As you can see, there’s a wide variety of disciplines under the umbrella of cartooning.

Here in mother soviet canuckistan, winter doesn’t end, the winter ends YOU.
Seriously. You think I might get a head start on spring if I break out the hair dryer and the extention cord?
MrDichotomies said, 5 months ago
Here in the Colorado Rockies, spring begins the day after the ski lifts shut down, which will be April 12 this year. Coincidentally, the same day I will get on a plane to Kauai to avoid 2 weeks of mud season (a.k.a. “Spring”).
somebodyshort said, 5 months ago
who ever came up with the term canuckistan, I keep using it too. everybody going to watch the opening ceremony in lotusland? here in the banana belt it’s still cold, just had a deer look in my window.

Then again, that was one year only. ;)

In Da U P they claim to have 10 months of winter and two months of bad sledding…
whitecarabao said, 5 months ago
Wiley knows New England.
Around Bahston the restaurants stop serving iced tea on the day after Labor Day because it’s “winter” (even if it’s 85 F outside), and they stop serving hot apple cider the day after Memorial Day because it’s “summer”.
Poor Vancouver! When you want cold and snow, it ain’t there. This year it looks like the Winter Olympics should have been at Baltimore.

WIley, you have made my little corner of Red Sox Nation out here on the cold, windy plains very happy today. I love Truck Day! Happy Spring! I’ve tickets to some spring training games in March; can’t wait.
Hope you have something grand for Marathon Monday. I manage to qualifiy every year and go back to run, see the Sawx, and gorge on whole bellied clams!

Wiley thank you for the links. I didn’t know what Truck Day was and just thought they looked like they needed to celebrate.
I’ll look at the one on cartooning soon. I am interested in learning more about it (not an aspiring cartoonist, my 3 year old niece draws better than me).
Oh, it was about 3am in the morning here when I suggested beer. I’m glad it is appropriate to the occasion if perhaps a little early in the day.
BTW - Is now a good time to mention that I think beer is yucky?

I’m in Oklahoma, too, along with JAD, Lordgdogmore, and Skipping. Maybe we should all meet in OKC and get to know each other. The last couple of days have been really cold with no old snow melting at all, but today will be better-40s. Lived here all my life and have never seen or been near a tornado. Even though my jonquils are above ground, Spring has NOT arrived. No one ever reads my posts because I read comics around noon when housework/chores are all done.

Note: Sports columnist said she had green graas in her lawn in Bahston yesterday on “round the horn.” Meanwhile, my cat keeps complaining that the snow is too cold for his outside adventures and demanding I drag out the lawn furniture. The neighbor’s cat has it gigged, walking in my bootprints after i clear the walks. Luv: If you had as much beer as you preach, the running wouldn’t have to do with comments sections.

LuvH8 Any time is beer time, I just put mine out the back door for a couple of minutes and it’s great. I’m not a great fan of beer, but any beer is better than no beer

Here in western Oregon, Spring is when the rain gets a little warmer. Forget global warming, I want some “global-wringing-out-and-hanging-in-the-sun-to-dry.”

freeholder1 and somebodyshort - I actually prefer rootbeer but on special occasions I will drink it from a bottle so I can pretend to be an adult.
POPPA1956 - I know how you feel, I keep having the words:
Rain, rain go away. Come again some other day. — stuck in my head.
