    What is kind of amazing/amusing to me is that the more conservative types on this site do not seem to realize that his district is in California, the most hated of liberal states! What is not realized is that California itself is like a miniature US, in that there are areas of this state that are just as conservative as states such as Mississippi are over all. One such area is the more rural area of the central valley, which is where Issa’s district is. In fact, there is even an ultra conservative movement in California that would like to see California succeed from the US in the same manner that such a group would like to see Texas also do. Luckily, for the rest of the US, they also are a minority, and will not be able to influence the millions of sensible Californians to do that as it would result in an economic disaster for the US itself at least as much as such a move would result in an economic disaster for California.

    This is especially true for the US as Californians pay $1.00 in federal taxes and get back only some $0.78 in federal benefits. This, plus the simple fact that California is the only state in the US with over a $2 trillion dollar GDP ($2.2 trillion to be exact), and is also the only state in the US that is among the top ten economies in the entire world, so this means that it is imperative that California (despite what some of our more conservative members here might post) stay as a fully contributing member of the US. Not to worry however, as we more moderate conservatives and liberal here in California are more than happy to continue to contribute to the over all good of the US in general (even the most conservative of states)!!!

    @Robert Landers

    In 1966 when I was a high school student in California some of us marched in Sacramento against govenor Reagan because he wanted to raise school tuition.

    More people live in just the SF Bay Area than in the the whole of Washington state.

    It wasn’t just Reagan. Deukmejian determined that the then tuition at California colleges, especially UC, was a SUBSIDY FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS (!) and should be eliminated as quickly as possible.

    Robert Landers: Issa’s district is the 49th Congressional disticrict which is in San Diego County, and includes a small portion of Orange County, the most “conservative” not just in California, but perhaps the U.S., as in home of the John Birch Society stronghold in the ’60’s. I believe he’s from Vista, himself.

    Issa isn’t from the Central Valley, but some of the worst “conservative” representatives in the past, have been.

    I used to live in Tuolumne County, California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. T. C. is considered a ‘depressed county, meaning most people are below the poverty line, job unemployment is high, and a lot are on food-stamps. They are highly prejudiced, are highly Un-educated, either they have never been out of their County, or only visited other Counties in the same state. This is where people like Issa thrive. . Toulumne always voted GOP, this never ceases to amaze me. I remember when my husband was stationed in Georgia, when people learned I was from California, they would say, “We know you think of us as red-necks,” I would answer, "No one could be more red-neck than where I’m from". They would answer, “But, you’re from California!”, I’d answer, “Small rural towns are all alike”. So yes, I agree with Robert Landers, California is like a miniature United STates, Thank the heavens above I’m one of the Progressive ones.
