Marty Links was the creator of the comic strip “Emmy Lou” which ran in newspapers all over the world for over 35 years. Marty Links was a pioneer-- a woman cartoonist at a time when the cartoon business was really a boy’s club. For over 40 years, Marty would whisk through the San Francisco Chronicle city room delivering a weekly batch of cartoons with the same gusto as Emmy Lou would.

It’s so much fun to spot little details in Marty’s drawings…here, the herringbone pattern of Dad’s pants is missing from most of his left side. Maybe the proximity to the lines on the newspaper made her think some white space would be more effective! But then, how to explain the missing cuff line on Emmy Lou’s left sleeve…

Call Alvin. Tell him you were calling one of your friends and must have dialed the right number. He’ll like it.

Hi Annieb1012…Well she always said that she was “the fastest draw in the west”! Dad must’ve had Emmy Lou wash his pants! We’ll make a game of it on our website coming soon!!

Her dad reminds me of the actor who played Mel in the Dick Van Dyke TV series.

In the Mr. Ed episode that was linked a couple of days ago, Emmy’s father was played by George O’Hanlon (George Jetson). He had a full head of hair.
