Causing an accident while texting should carry the same charge as DUI.

Daviddeer - I concur, but it should not just be limited to texting. It should be a general DWI or DWD - Driving While Impaired or Driving While Distracted - which would incorporate any activity (eating, applying makeup, reading, cell phone use, etc) that actively distracts the driver to the point where they become a hazard to other drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians.

Of course, I also think that drivers should be tested on a regular basis - once every 10 years or so. This would help refresh driving skills and keep drivers up-to-date with driving laws and norms, and to get people off the roads when their age starts to affect their ability to drive safely.

I know this would be unpopular and expensive to implement, but it would be interesting to compare the cost/payback of this idea with the cost/payback of other measures already implemented in the name of safety, for example with passenger screening at airports.

On youtube there is On Bus video of a San Antonio City Bus Driver pulling out his cell to text in heavy traffic. He loks up, Too Late, he does not have time to stop and plows into an SUV in front of him.

The Video shows him smacking the steerig wheel. Yes,they executed him from their employ.

New saying for a public service annoucement ad,

    “Please don’t TEXT & drive!”

Also that happened in Los Angeles county when a engineer was texting while operating a Metrolink commuter train & causing one of the worst commuter train wrecks in U.S. History & recently in Austin Texas when a member of the University of Texas football player was texying while driving & plowed into an apartment building near the campus.
