An Iranian translator pointed out on Bill Maher, and elsewhere, that the “Death to” literal translation does NOT reflect the real vernacular that equates more to our “up yours” type of comment. It is NOT literal, but our “press” keeps jumping on it. How often do WE make the comment “I’m gonna kill that so and so”, and in no way mean it literally?

dtroutma - just don’t say that about The Prez. The Secret Service doesn’t care if you mean it literally or not.

Iranian leaders might think that Twitter is ruining them, but it is ruining us, too, because some e-gadget addicts Twitter more than live life itself.

Dtroutma, is that a fact? If it is, then it’s a little known one. I’d be interested in learning if it’s true. “Screw you” while still not positive of course, is preferable to “Kill you”.

So is the Great Satan Apple or Twitter and YouTube?

Transliteration of meaning is a common problem. It is especially a problem in a language like Arabic, or Japanese, where a word’s inflection can make a BIG difference in interpretation. Slang expressions accepted as used in California can even get you in BIG trouble in Georgia!
No, I do NOT recommend using “kill” or “bomb” around either TSA OR the Secret Service.
