    Here’s a dumb question from a non-golfer: If a ball is in the sand trap, are there rules prohibiting the use of a tee, or is the tee specifically used only for the opening drive?

    The tee is permitted only in the tee box (opening drive) and is optional. When in the sand trap, the player is not permitted to touch the ball, nor touch the sand with the club. In this case, there would be a penalty for slow play, and probably a penalty for improving the lie (I’d have to look into the rules to see the fine print).
