"Welcome to 'Classic Doonesbury.' In selecting the strips for this retrospective journey, we're going deep, literally back to Day One. Revisiting four weeks of strips from every year of syndication, I hope to hit many 'Doonesbury' high points, focusing on how the characters (over 75 of them) got involved with one another. Since their lives have always been bound up in the events of the day, it should be a kind of déjà vu for my peers, and maybe a 'What were you people thinking?' for newer readers. My mom taught me early in my parenthood that all children have the right to be unhappy and that it is unrealistic to expect them to be happy all the time. She said just be happy if their happy most of the time.
She also felt it was good parenting to tell them to go be unhappy in their bedrooms.

Our daughter acts out with us, not with others, and we prefer it that way. One time on a family trip, she got into a mood. I later told my sisters that meant they were now part of the inner circle.

My 5 “Perfect” children were lively little brats at home. Fight
and argue and I told them to cut to a whisper and they did. They are all almost 60 years old. Loving and caring for each
other and still argue but very protective of each other!
