Roland wouldn’t know a true Patriot if he saw one. I true Patriot is like a true friend. That person will tell you the low down, dirty, unlovely and unlikely TRUTH, no matter what.

We beat Germany and Japan. What did we do there that we didn’t do in Afghanistan, hmmm?

I have to add that a true patriot will also listen.

For one thing, Germans and Japanese had decency to wear uniforms. And they were basically beaten before we beat them back to their homelands. It’s too bad we didn’t learn anything from Vietnam, or from the USSR’s experience in Afghanistan.

We had something like ten million men in uniform, for a start. And the warfare was “conventional,” not guerrilla.

1-Have a draft where almost every eligible man between 18 to 45 serve. Even men with physical disabilities served. Morris Udall – a politician who I truly admired – served even though he only had one eye. The total military strength was 16.1 million.
2- Make victory our number one objective. No new cars were built, food was rationed, travel was curtailed.
3- Had a clear idea when victory was achieved. When the Allied troops reached Berlin – victory; when the Emperor of Japan announced he was surrendering – victory.

Exactly. In a sense, the whole country was involved in “fighting” that war.

Also, your mention of M. Udall made me think of Daniel Inouye. Talk about a hero.

Well, Simpsonfan, you didn’t attack Germany and Japan on false pretences, after destabilising the only modernist government they had ever had and replacing it with a rabble of warlords who in turn had to be taken down by a fundamentalist militia. You didn’t announce that you were bringing freedom, only to begin a colonial occupation with an incredibly incompetent and venal nonentity as your puppet president. You didn’t then hand over those countries right back to warlords and drone-murder wedding parties and schoolchildren. And most of all you didn’t do any of those things in Afghanistan, a country historically easy to defeat but impossible to conquer.

Have you noticed that that the politicians who have never been in a war are the first to send our best into them?…I’m looking at you republicans….

We won previous wars because we had discernible sides and fought messy, relatively unrestricted warfare. these days we are hampered by polticians making minor decisions, lawyers in the field and ridiculous rules of engagement. With those reins, one will never win any conflict.
