   Just what the world DOESN’T need, two more first world über-consumers who are very likely to grow up facing global warming hell. Easily the single most environmentally destructive thing most people will do in their life is breed. Without population control, indeed significant population reduction, every cause is a lost cause.

    world population will reach 7.067 billion folks by the middle of this year (by 2013 July) and will reach 9.31 billion by the middle of 2050. Alex’s twins should be 37 years old by then.
    

    
    However, the same website is titled Negative Population Growth, emphasizing that the annual growth RATE is leveling off. It’s 1.05% per year now. By 2049 (the last year the site has a figure for), it will be significantly down to 0.46% per year. That’s a drop of 0.59%.
    

    
    It’s like you’re driving your car on the Interstate somewhere. You’re going, say, 60 MPH. But you’re pushing down the accelerator to creep up to 70 MPH, then to 80, to 90, 100, and so on, at a steady rate of acceleration. But then you decide to let up on the gas pedal, such that you don’t reach 100 as soon as you would have. You’re still accelerating, but now you’re easing back.
    

    
    Likewise, world population continues to rise toward 10 billion beyond the year 2050 when the twins will be 37 years old. But if population growth weren’t leveling off, it would have reached 10 billion when they will be — I’m just guessing here — say, only 20 years old.

    NICE OPENER! I agree with everything you say, especially as the people who insist on having fifteen kids often have them to at least twelve different partners and leave them to God and good neighbours to raise!
