Or go the route I use for my strip – zero budget. Looks grainy though :|

The value of Doonesbury has never been in the art, but in the skewering political commentary. One line of evidence: the reich-wingers who sometimes squawk on this website, hiding their pain with bravado.

This is social and economic commentary. Perhaps Trudeau is addressing the failings of federal politics by focussing more on such things. I like this arc more all the time. If Trudeau was really about axing the grifters, why would he do it this way? Grifters are very much a part of the USA gestalt, and Doonesbury has always been very much about the USA.

“Grifter” today is yesterday’s “con man”. “Gestalt” is a German word with psychological connotations, meaning roughly “wholistic”, referring to therapy for the “whole person”. In my opinion George W. Bush and Condoleeza Rice are two grifters of historic proportions. I don’t see that Trudeau treats “grifters” wholistically. I don’t think he cares about such constraints. He doesn’t have to care. He just unsheathes his rapier.

I agree about conflating “grifter” and “con man.” But the gestalt of the USA is not Trudeau’s gestalt, nor mine, nor yours.

I can’t come up with a better word, but it’s all about value systems.

We can all agree that we don’t like con men, but their presence in the strip is part of what keeps it a genuine mirror of this culture.

I have no quarrel with either of your two posts.
