Though I’ve seen this strip before, I still find something new in it: a deeper insight into Alex’s personality.

She’s capable of outrageous self-deception — just as Jeff Redfern is.

Why does Trudeau “write” such a trait into certain of his “creatures”?

He wants them to seem human?

Leo’s mother is right: Alex looks like a terrier. She’s not as intelligent as one, though.

She has everything worked out – except maybe for one little detail.

Maybe “creations” is better than “creatures” but characters is better still.

Actually, if you think about it, he writes that quality into ALL of his characters, in a greater or lesser degree. The dissonance between the way his characters see themselves and the way we see them is the source of most of his humor; and the fact that this is so for ALL his characters is the saving grace of the strip.

All his characters tend to preach, all his characters are given the opportunity to make pithy and insightful observations, but all the preachers and all the observers are themselves flawed and biased.

I’d say that is EXACTLY like the real world.

What do you mean by “intelligent”? She’s a star at MIT, for gosh sake. My brother-in-law is the most brilliant person I know, hard-working and athletic to boot. But as a result he has little patience with lesser mortals, and even less understanding, less sympathy, in dealing with them. And no time to indulge their foibles.

Recently he was at a family gathering and rolling his eyes and loudly declaiming the absurdity of ritually chanting “bless you” every time someone sneezed.

That’s not a lack of intelligence. It is a lack of something, however.

A good terrier does have something Alex lacks, it is true. But dogs all have some things that we humans all lack, don’t you think?

She is her father’s daughter. Remember the very first Doonesbury comic. Mike said that women adore him.

For such an intelligent child, she certainly does regress easily.

    Wisdom/experience perhaps?

    Including Trudeau himself? Me? You?

Well, I don’t find Alex’s behavior so odd. About 47 years ago, I got so enthusiastic (and certain) of marrying my wife that a week before I asked her, I told all our friends we would tie the knot. Fortunately, she only made me wait another week to say yes. It just seemed to be inevitable.

The number of Doonesbury characters seems to grow exponentially. Thus he must necessarily leave loose ends everywhere. But this strategy enables him to keep up with the quickly changing world of events — to some extent anyway. Sometimes he misfires, as he did with The Donald’s abortion of a campaign for the GOP nom.

Trudeau may be a contemporary genius, but he’s no prophet.

“… Zeke Brenner and that biker bum who tried to burglarize …”.

    Nice alliterative phrase.
