The Hope Machine is Obama. How do you reboot the complex military industrial Insanity and praise the rich former CIA head (father of a war criminal) helping him shill thousand points of light voluntarism as the Little Engine That Could gizmo enlivening the Oprah sound-bite break keeps short-circuiting the real solution?
I’m a hard-core liberal who didn’t vote for Obama because he was too conservative. It’s good to see other liberals catching up with what I realized a year ago.
Garry is a fake liberal. Remember a couple of weeks ago, he trashed 9/11 truth and it was never part of the plot and he never incorporated anything funny in it.
I was reading yesterdays comments and I know this is late but I have got to ask one of the posters. At the ucomics website you go by daviddow, what name to go by on Megans law website?
Well, if the Federal Government were using all of that wasted in Afghanistan $60 Billion for needed social programs, like health care, Medicaid and Medicare, those on Social Security Pensions wouldn’t even have to pay a monthly premium for Medicare.
I’ve been following Doonesbury for 30 years, and Garry’s a liberal, but he’s also smart enough to see thru this charlatan in the Oval Office. I wouldn’t be too surprised though if he moved a little to the right someday.
My question is, why do the folks on the left so often speak of the cost in dollars instead of people? I want us to continue and to win in Afghanistan, but I don’t count the cost in dollars.
I guess if you can count the cost in dollars, rather than finding the quickest and most direct route to victory - which would save lives - it’s ok to sit around for 2-3 months to decide how to proceed.
Gary isnt a liberal or a conservative. He is an American. He doesnt want whats right for the Democrats or the Republicans. He wants what is right for the country. Of course he has to base his judgement on his own opinion. And many consider his opinion to be liberal, so he’s cast that way. Like Dr. Toon said, Gary satirizes anyone and everyone that needs it. That’s the purpose of good journalism, to comment on things in a non-biased way.
FredBassetFun, just what the hell is FUNNY about 9/11?
As for the rest of you armchair politicians–Obama is NOT God and he is NOT the Messiah! He’s been in office only 10 months, and everyone expects him to have already repaired the disaster it took the Bush administration 8 YEARS to create. And every forward step he has taken has been lambasted by Republicans and neo-cons.
Obama should erase one word from his vocabulary: BI-PARTISANSHIP.
Tell me, do you REALLY believe this country would be better off with McBush and Caribou Barbie? I don’t.
Afganistan:
Population about 28 million (about 2.5 times LA County)
Anual GDP about $22 billion
Annual GDP per capita about $800
Give every man, woman, and child two years’ GDP (about $2,000 each) equals about $50 billion and get the hell out. It would be a lot cheaper and our troops wouldn’t be in danger.
Frankly, the Afgans aren’t worth the sweat off my “brow.”
Vietnam’s oil, which China thinks is its oil is offshore under the sea. One of the reasons that China is growing its navy is to ensure dominance over the disputed region.
Dypak brings up a point when he says: “Gary isnt a liberal or a conservative. He is an American.”
That’s something both sides need to remember about each other. If we decide that calling someone liberal or conservative is more important than calling them an American, then the United States of America will cease to exist.
“Garry is a fake liberal. Remember a couple of weeks ago, he trashed 9/11 truth and it was never part of the plot and he never incorporated anything funny in it.”
9/11 truth? 19 shebabs (i.e., young Arabs) managed a totally unanticipated attack that destroyed the World Trade Center.
My friend, Prof. Occam, who gave me the instrument with which I remove the whiskers from my chin, would say that such a simple attack must be attributed to the 19 shebabs who killed themselves executing it.
Or, as Peter Sagal said, ‘Had Bush been President in ‘41, he would have ordered a massive attack on Bulgaria.’
Do you claim that Bush drove his pick-em-up truck to plant explosives? Or that Mossad planted the explosives and then projected holograms of the planes? Or that the Jewish names of the victims were all planted by the Jewish media, since not one single Jew died on 9/11?
Fred his own personal self has much more sense than ‘Fred Basset fan.’
Garry Trudeau has often been accused by our more rightist citizens as being “biased”. Like a comic strip is suppose to be a news report? Trudeau at least can satirize left-of-center politicians when he feels the jussification arises, and is therefore more “balanced” than any “conservative” strip I’ve ever seen.
In contrast, can anyone – anyone – point to a “Mallard Fillmore” offering in which any “conservative” politician is satirized? (With the possible exception of “Mallard” criticizing them for not being conservative enough.)
Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran…. the problem with any of those countries, is one of societal values shaped over generations. Getting them to even start thinking or valuing what we feel is important would take…. at the least… a generation to begin, unless you wanted to take a shortcut and were willing to wipe out anyone over 7 or 8 years old and raise the children left behind with what you value. That’s not a opinion on what should or should not be done, right or wrong, but what I see as an…. well…. inconvenient truth.
Trudeau has ALWAYS satirized whoEVER is in the White House, regardless of party, which is part of the reason why attempts to compare Doonesbury to a purely partisan comic like Mallard Fillmore are completely foolish. Although the right-wing does that all the time.
Bruce Tinsley has only one talent, liberal bashing. Usually he uses the old. “the think differently than I do so they are stupid” tactic. cfortunato and Alabama Al are both right, Mallard Fillmore is nowhere near as fair as Doonesbury.
G.B. Trudeau’s Doonesbury is currently in its thirty-ninth year, tracking its eighth presidential administration. Trudeau maintains his studio in New York and his Web presence at www.doonesbury.com.

Garry has satirized every president.
He is a liberal, so he can be expected to go harder on the right.
That does not mean the left gets a free ride.

Some people whom I have personally met in the past 20 years have told me that the Vietnam Conflict was about drugs, too.
It has been documented that Oil was one of the reasons that the USA got involved with Vietnam.

What were the expectations, when USA troops went to Afghanistán?
Were they prepared to face “guerrilla” as well as they did at Vietnam?
Did they planned to put McDonald’s in every corner of every town?
Maybe you’re not awared of this, but most people in the eastern world sees USA as USA sees E.T.
Is it money-givinng issue?: Let’s investigate about inflation and devaluation.
I’m not totally convinced that Obama is the devil, but Bush and his friends making bussines over there are not completely in God’s side!
