Artistic genius (which, frankly, is a role in which I do NOT see Mr. Polanski) does not reduce the statute of limitations, nor does it preclude criminal behaviour.
Ouirsophuct, those who are quick to judge roman Polanski don’t want us to look into issues that matter: the unlawful occupations of Iraq & Afghanistan, the health-care crisis, the yawning gap between wealthy & poor in the U.S. are globally; the millions of starving & impoverished families; the financially strapped & badly organized American education system; the state-killing continuing in 3/5ths of American states; &c., &c. In addition, those quick to judge Polanski would rather we did not hold a bright light over their own lives.
We covered the facts about the Polanski mess yesterday. We really should move on. I agree (referring to yesterday) with Brewwitch about DOONESBURY’s ability to provoke discussion and about its consistently nervy, entertaining, & intelligent look at current topics. I agree with Nemesys that this forum isn’t a courtroom. Nothing, however, stops us from still practicing rational objectivity & leaving our prejudices, perversions, & pathologies at the door and looking at all the facts when considering Polanski’s behavior.
Okay, I gave myself five minutes to comment, and I have spent seven. Good day.
Yes the world hasbetter things to worry abouthtan Roman Polanski but they should still try. ANy person who breaks the law should have a day in court. Just because he’s rich, it happened more than a decade aga, the girls mom is an idiot and she just got paid a fat check and is writng a book doesn’t mean convicted of sleeping with THIRTEEN year olds should go free.
I got to hand it to Gary Trudeau he is about the only left leaning celebrity who is going after Polanski for what he is a rich scumbag. You really can’t fault Hollywood for their reaction to this, Michael Jackson got away with his stuff for years. Then he Married a White woman and used white men for the DNA for his kids. Why not his own DNA? It always made me wonder.
OJ got off with murder and I don’t think anyone can count how many people died from drugs over the pass 30 or 40 years and Hollywood glorifies these same people as brave.
The problem is us we glorify celebrities to the point we think they are better then us. If is wrong but we do.
Remember a few years back when that guy who co-founded earth day was wanted for murder. A lot of people were saying he did not do it even though the girls body was found in his apartment. Were did he go to hide. France. He wasn’t even a citizen like Polanski.
It is kind of funny David saying that anyone who wants us thinking of Polanski is trying to distract us from all the other issues of the world. Trudeau has been on many of the issues David brought up for over 40 years.
Oh, well. So much for my saying how much BD has evolved (Oct. 13). But that’s part of what’s so real and so great about this strip. Like everyone else on the planet, BD’s personal growth is, at best, uneven.
As I’ve said, I’m new here, but I’ve been reading Doonesbury since MIke showed up in his dorm to find that BD would be his roomie. Call me Pollyanna, but I just think it’s so cool that we’re all here debating this strip this way. Ever wonder if Trudeau reads any of this? Who knows, maybe jimpow’s real name is…
The trial is over. He plead guilty,
then ran when he heard the sentence.
As for the victim not wanting to press charges,
irrelevant in molestation cases.
Rob, it was a bit the other way around: BD was in the room and Mike showed up, and BD had the glum internal reaction: “Still a few bugs in the system”. Garry Trudeau has been examining the bugs in the system ever since.
I am glad that we will move on from this Polanski silliness.
G.B. Trudeau’s Doonesbury is currently in its thirty-ninth year, tracking its eighth presidential administration. Trudeau maintains his studio in New York and his Web presence at www.doonesbury.com.

With all the dumb actors who signed to free Polanski, it’s good to remember what Hitchcock said - actors are like cattle.

I thought that hitchcock, after being challenged about his statement, said “I said all actors should be TREATED like cattle”

I believe the Polanski trial will be a bigger media circus than the OJ trial ever was.
It’ll be very interesting to hear the victim’s testimony.

Check out what Hitchcock really said (or maybe he said; how do you really know with what you find online?) at http://hitchcock.tv/quotes/quotes.html
