    I’ll admit I didn’t know most of the story about Mr. Polanski and actually thought it wasn’t so bad. Then the misses asked me exactly what he had done which is when I went and looked it up instead of depending on all the stories in the media which were defending him by not admitting what he had done. Taught me again never depend on the media but like R. Heinlein said “get the facts”.

    The facts: Thirty-two years ago, Roman Polanski, widowed, age 44, took some photos of Samantha Gailey, age thirteen, because the girl, her mother, & Polanski all thought that the girl might have a career in modeling or in the movies. After spending some hours posing & photographing, Polanski & Gailey drank champagne, took Quaaludes, & had sex.

    After this event, Polanski & Gailey, old enough to be married in California with her parent’s permission, never had sex again.

    The state of California charged Polanski with statutory rape, unlawful sex with a minor, and supplying a minor with a controlled substance. Polanski entered a plea agreement, pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. The judge voided the plea bargain and told Polanski’s attorneys that he would sentence Polanski to prison and then to be deported. Thus, Polanski fled the country, in effect, agreeing with the latter half of the judge’s sentence, deporting himself.

    In 1988, Gailey, age 24, sued Polanski, and they settled the lawsuit out of court in 1993. In 2009, Gailey, now Geimer, filed to have all charges against Polanski dismissed. Judge Peter Espinoza, who heard a filing of the same sort by Polanski’s lawyers, stated that the original judge committed misconduct.

    Forgive me if I change the subject - I’m new to this forum - I was just thinking about how much Trudeau’s characters have evolved over the past 40-some years. Real evolution is very rare in the funny papers. For instance, BD has mellowed so much since Iraq and PTSD, when he finally removed his football helmet (a tremendous symbolic gesture).

    re: Polanski: There is no such thing as truly consensual sex between a 13-year-old and someone more than twice their age. Even if Polanski was not in a position to help the child’s career, there still was a tremendous power imbalance. And even if the child threw herself at him, he was the adult, and he was obligated by our society’s rules & norms to behave responsibly.
    Situations likes this are tragic. Everyone involved gets their life screwed up.
    When I was a photographer, a woman used her aspiring 15-yr-old daughter to try to get my attention for herself. I cordially ignored her. I just wanted to take good pictures.

Everything else is a moot point as far as the law is concerned. As far as the courts are concerned the victim cannot forgive, give permission or anything else. Roman Polanski is a convicted rapist pure and simple.

    I do agree that DOONESBURY’s characters have evolved practically like real people. Garry Trudeau is one of the great comics creators–and pioneers–of the last hundred years.
