As a Ronald Reagan Republican I disagree with most of what GT says. But I want to thank him for his portrayal of BD. I am 52 so I was fortuanate enough to be too young for Vietnam. I sevrved with many Viet vets and have work with many the years since. I am so sick of the media parading out these homeless guys still in a field jacket 40 years later and saying this is the typical vet. The vets I know are like BD. Sure they may have some problems but dont let this define them They are for the most part succcesfull people that you be proud to have as youre niehgbor and friend. He is the best dad, husband and friend he can be. My one question is after 35 years in the army why is he still an LT?
@jtpozenel, where did you find a colorized pic of Chester Conklin? Kinda reminds me of my mental state after a day dealing with VA trying to get my disability claims going.
fbjsr: Why is BD still an LT? Perhaps the answer lies in the Beetle Bailey strip. Mort Walker once promoted Beetle to PFC (at that time a single chevron), but later busted him back to PVT (E2) because “some things should remain constant.”
Today Beetle still wears a single chevron but it is now the insignia of a PVT (E2). Today’s PFC insignia is a single chevron with a single rocker.
I’d have to look it up to be sure about the details, but BD isn’t career army: He was drafted in the early 70s during the Viet Nam War; some time later became a reservist; and was called up for the 1993 invasion of Baghdad.
New guy here. I don’t think BD was drafted for Vietnam, I think he volunteered. I think he remained an enlisted man during most of his time in the service, active and reserve, and was commissioned in Iraq during his last war.
After I became homeless, here in Tulsa, Oklahoma in March 1984, I met a lot of other homeless Vietnam Veterans and Vietnam Era Veterans.
I was in the US Army when I was stationed in S. Vietnam during the period of Feb 15, ‘67 through Feb 13, ‘68.
While homeless vets are not the so-typical vets, most Veterans who spent time in a war-zone and were under attack a few times, do have a lot in common.
One can go for 10, 20, or more years without thinking they will ever suffer from PTSD; but, something will trigger a memory of what happened in the war and the flashback will activate the PTSD.
B.D. is an Iraq War Veteran; that’s where he lost his leg. He was probably given a “field commission” while he was in Iraq.
From what I remember of Doonesbury at the time of the Vietnam War, BD volunteered to join in order to get out of exams or a homework assignment or some such (he was definitely not drafted). Michael Doonesbury was suitably stunned when BD told him he had volunteered and why.

He volunteered in order to get out of doing a term paper.
Yo mushroom, I’m not head injured, and I’m a registered Republican. I am a proud veteran (retired Navy active and reserves) who served during the Cold War and did a tour in the current Iraq conflict before retiring. I’m not a Democrat because I can’t stand the level of “tolerance” that most vocal Democrats spew when face to face with differing points of view. I’m also not a die-hard Republican because I can’t stand the hypocrisy of espousing “family values” while carrying on extra-marital affairs, and cutting back on military sepnding while attempting to fight conflicts on two fronts. My main mantra these days (and it’s reversible) is “If you hate the GOP and you don’t despise the Democratic party as well, you’re simply not paying attention.” Term limits for Congress such as were enacted for the Presidency seem to be a very good idea in my opinion. Folks who complain about all the “experience” we’ll lose seem to forget that that “experience” is what caused most of the problems we see right now. Term limits for all. NOW.
G.B. Trudeau’s Doonesbury is currently in its thirty-ninth year, tracking its eighth presidential administration. Trudeau maintains his studio in New York and his Web presence at www.doonesbury.com.

Could be a Mustang officer…
And ah, the power of suggestion… didn’t quite work, but one has to appreciate the effort.

The quarterback is bound to be in management someday (or writing resumes professionally.)

The Head injured is the future head of the RNC, if he can work up enough irrational fears. He has the forgotting part down.
