Mom married a loser. Like mother, like daughter. But wait a minute– maybe the music group will be a huge success.

    Toggle is not a loser.

Well, Toggle seems to be a good kid. Zeke? Not so much… (actually, pretty rotten. Remember him setting the Biker after Mike’s mom?)

Joanie should talk, she also is divorced from JJ’s dad.

I don’t like the turn this is taking. Toggle is no Zeke. Go with your heart Alex!

Zeke can afford to retire. He’s been putting away thousands of shares of General Motors stock for the past 20 years. Time to lean back and collect the dividends!

Toggle’s story is barely started–he’s not going to be content with things the way they are!

Toggle is nothing like Zeke! Toggle joined the army, served bravely, and now he’s starting a new career on his own with his talents.

I hope Trudeau isn’t stupid enough to split the world into two groups, the worthless ones being those who didn’t go to a prestigious school.

I forget where it was in the story arc, but Toggle was actually thinking about going to college at some point.

some person commented on ‘bloom county’ yesterday that bloom county was merely liberal but doonesbury was openly communist…
    really
    he really said that
    communist,

I thought calling anybody who disagreed with you a pinko communist was out of style..
are the commies still the bad guys?

it’s getting hard to keep score

I suppose it would be simpler to just nuke ‘em all and sort it out later

Before the last frame, I thought Joanie was referencing the fact that JJ married Mike (Alex’s dad), and THAT’s why she was upset.

Of course, the door’s still open to saying that BOTH Mike and Zeke are “wrong” for JJ…

Actually, JJ seems pretty much wrong for anyone…

But Alex “sounds like her mom”? Sounds like her mom’s situation, maybe, but I don’t recall JJ ever actually making the blindingly obvious admission of Zeke’s wrongness.

JJ, welcome back! Forgot to tell you last time: Go with “foremost.” It has that Anglosaxon umph. “Pre-eminent” has that Latinate la-dee-dah.

And JJ, why have you stuck so long with that scoundrel and loser, Zeke?

I don’t think Grams was trying to imply that Toggle is a loser like Zeke. I think she’s far too wise for that and knows that telling Alex she sounds like her Mom will be the quickest way to get her to quit talking the way she is!!
    Go Grams!

I still remember how JJ got Mike in the first place - she called him at his dorm and asked him to come over. He said (for whatever reason) he couldn’t, so JJ said “Well, then, I guess I’ll have to take a shower alone”. Needless to say, the next panel showed Mike’s dorm room empty. Mike was from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but he learned fast.
And Joanie was divorced from Clinton Caucus, who was never actually in the strip, as far as I know.

MamaTaney, I think you’ve got it. And Toggle’s already done more with his life than Zeke ever could. He served in the military and is working on his aphasia. That alone is more hard work in a few years than Zeke’s done in a decade.

Let’s face it, Alex. You’re no great prize yourself. Any girl with a nose like an ardvaark isn’t exactly Miss USA material.
    ——
You’ve got to be kidding. Miss USA has all the class and brains of an old loaf of bread. Even with the nose Alex is the better pick.

    Well, pride, I imagine.

And “jobs” or not – they don’t come much “odder” than Uncle Stupidhead.

Toggle’s a sweetheart – you could do much worse!

Joan’s first husband was a really good person to get a divorce from. He did appear in the strip now and then. I think getting a divorce from him showed excellent judgement on Joanie’s part,
