I remember this one from shortly before the election.
(great logic Z, but how are you going to stop the appetite for two days?)

Has anyone noticed the ad to the left of the comments? Is this accidental, or a case of targeted advertising (or whatever it’s called)?

GEE1a, what’s wrong with this picture: people who live in opressive dictatorships and countries with civil wars are starving, and everyone else needs to go on a diet.
(Remember, poor Americans are more likely to be overweight than wealthy ones, if you can still find any.)
If this comment bothers you, then find two counter-examples. There are almost 200 countries; it shouldn’t be hard.

In the late 1980’s, the U of Illinois published a study that said if all Americans weighed their optimal weight, the US would not need to import a single barrel of oil …..
and Americans have gained at least an average of 10 pounds since.

Seriously, calories are a worry, but go on any of the major fast-food restaurants’ websites, click on one your favorite sandwiches, then bring up the nutritional info (they all have that posted). I’m more scared with the amount of sodium in that food than the calories.

Okay; I guess I’m just being dense about this. How would everyone losing a bunch of weight decrease oil consumption by a really large percentage? Sure, auto fuel economy would go up, but only a tiny bit (less than 1 mpg), and thin people tend to “run cooler,” so we could save a little on A/C.
But that’s nowhere near enough. Where are the real savings? Food?
True, we wouldn’t have to grow, transport, process and cook as much, but enough for that? Or are they counting on a huge shift from meat to fruits and vegetables?
Or am I missing something entirely?
Maybe someone could post a link. I’m really intrigued.

Yes, a great time-saver; eat your meal and proceed directly to cardiac arrest, no waiting.

I’m really intrigued too.
I’m no farmer but their equipment don’t look very fuel efficient to me and there is a lot of big engines required in all the steps from ‘land prep-grow-to on your table-chain.
Please post a link Misterwhite or anybody else to back up
that claim

Some of the people need to have diet for their health’s sakes. Some of others don’t need the diet just eat regularly to keep their healths stable. I for myself do not need the diet because I am thin and slender and I hardly become fat because something inside my body tends to burn up easily. It is so weird but that’s me anyway.

NotFromIceland, it’s certainly not accidental.
Ergo, targeted–just like the long-running (and ubiquitous) bus-side ads.
RinaFarina said, 5 months ago
@NotFromIceland, on my screen there is nothing to the left of the comments except their avatars.
Could it be because some people have free access to the Internet (I pay for mine), so they pay by having ads? I was using a friend’s computer, which had free access, and pop-up, bounce-up-and-down, swirling ads were constantly appearing. I was very glad I didn’t have them on my computer. I hadn’t really appreciated it before.
