And Jeff’s mom, too.
Successful as she was in law and politics, seems that Joanie didn’t do such a great job with her kids.
J.J. dumped her husband and daughter to shack up with that worthless loser, Zeke Brenner, and Jeff…well, don’t ask!
Susan, you’re probably right, but there’s an old Chinese aphorism… “A man who is thirty and has achieved nothing is still young and may amount to something in the end. A man who is forty and has achieved nothing is no longer young, but may still be successful. A man who is fifty and has achieved nothing may be disregarded without consequence.”
JJ and Jeff still have time to turn around (and, after all, JJ is a successful artist, even if her taste in men really bites). Even if they don’t, it’s not necessarily their parents’ fault, is it?
Not always, Roger, but in this case, you must remember that Joanie herself gave up custody of J.J. when she divorced her first husband; they didn’t reunite until J.J. was grown. Joanie was (and still is) a staunch feminist, and J.J. was quite a handful as a child–actually, she was a brat. Back then, for a woman, it was either career or domesticity; Joanie chose the former.
And for those who don’t know: Jeff is Joanie’s offspring with her second husband, Rick.
Susan001 - That’s right, I remembered that Joanie spent some time as a single mom but I’d forgotten that she didn’t have custody of JJ after a divorce and while she was in law school.
We are having fun with it… it’s fun to try to piece together the DB storyline for the last 20 years or so, see how much each of us remembers, and relive the good parts.
As long as we’re on the topic of Donnesbury geneology–
Joanie had two kids by her first husband. We did not see them at the time, only heard their voices through the motel room door as her first hubby played a tape recording of them crying .
Anyway, anyone remember the name of JJ’s sister (Alex’s aunt)?

EDIT: ANGEL… oops, eh-heh

no, no, no… that’s MIKE’s mother. Joanie is JJ’s mom, Rick Redfern’s wife and a D.C. attorney.

It is. He and JJ were married, until she dumped him. The Grammy she’s talking to is JJ’s mom.

Lynn - Mike is Alex’s dad, and JJ is her mom. JJ and Mike split up several years back.

Thanks – I’ve been following this since the ‘70’s, and sometimes it makes my head spin!

Zeke Brenner = “Uncle Stupidhead”. I still laugh at that one.

Are they Hell’s acute, obtuse, or right Angles? I can never remember.
Orgelspieler said, about 1 year ago
given that they’re still mostly doing drugs and riding the freeways without helmets, I’d say they’re pretty obtuse.

Why thank you, sir! I would never do anything so foolish as to crawl into a microwave. ;-) It’s been fun talking about the Doonesbury family tree.

Say, weren’t the Whateleys involved in several of Lovecraft’s stories?
