Senator: General, when you became Nixon's Chief of Staff during the Watergate crisis, what did you hope to accomplish? Alexander Haig: As I've already indicated, I sought to preserve the Constitution. Senator: Are you serious? Fighting to withhold evidence, advising Nixon to lie, ordering the special prosecutor fired - all that was to preserve the Constitution? Haig: Affirmative. Senator: sigh. General, if you're confirmed, do you expect to be doing the Constitution any further favors? Haig: Not at this point in time.
