We have ‘em, so what? It’s the ‘80’s all over again for no reason…who is it Obama helps by trying to jeopardize our nuclear deterrent? Do we get to inspect Russian nukes and have them destroyed? Libs on knee-jerk or flash-back mode.

Lord I wish you would make sense.

I know. I can’t understand Wright either.

I think Parker was talking about you NFP. Russia’s Nukes are not our problem with today’s Russia. We have a lot of problems with Russia but nuclear weapons are not one of them. The point is that we need to avoid falling into the old cold war position with Russia and unfortunately the events over the past decade have made this difficult. The following article lays things out pretty well.

Pup- essentially what Wright is saying is how many times over must we be able to incinerate the entire planet before saying we have ENOUGH NUKES! Getting rid of those beyond destroying the planet 399 times is only a small step.

Think Rabid Libs in the ‘80 Like Neil Young and John Kerry at NoNukes rallies…Then think how the Soviet Union was crumbling economically because we out-lasted them conceptually. (Our strong nuclear defense being part of that equation). Think Libs are consistently on the “mistaken” side.

Shakey, good imagination. The Soviet Union imploded due to a corrupt government and missmanaged economy inspite of what St, Reagan wanted you to believe.

@NoFear: That’s exactly what we need: Another destabilzed nuclear power.
What’s the bigger thread to the US: Less nuclear missles or the giant IOU to China? (Guess who is paying for the giant military budget.)

If we eliminate say, half of them, then we can also maintain and protect them more effectively.

Humps,
Their economy wouldn’t have collapsed nearly as quickly if they hadn’t been trying to match our military spending. If I remember rightly they were spending close to 70% of their GDP on the military. No enonomy can support that for long, much less their admittedly corrupt and inefficient one.
That being said, we are not in the same situation as we were in the cold war and I can’t understand why any sane individual would want to go back to that mentality. BTW cdward also makes a good point. Maintenence would be easier. I’m not sure you would save much on security since the base costs are pretty high. Now, if you look at these two items with respect to the Russian arsenal you get some real concerns.

Thanks for the link Gladius. And Russians on the boards? I’d like verification of some of the claims being made in the publication, specifically anti-western teaching in schools.

I noticed that, too, TrickyPickle. It’s a little much to expect a populace known for its privacy and aloofness and “playing it close to the vest” as it were,(amongst its own citizens, especially),to engage in anti- Western Ideology Fads. I think the reporter is paying attention to the Young-adult faddish crowd of Russia, maybe? Or the left-wing? equivalent of our Conservative Radio Media? Russian policy-makers and -shapers would seem to be more canny about international affairs.
Good link BTW, Gladius. Also, after reading that article, I can give more credit to Obama. Maybe they can use the issue to better our relations with Russia.

The Soviet Union collapsed because bin Laden sucked them into an unwinnable war in Afghanistan, which bankrupted the country trying to maintain it. bin Laden then said he would do the same to American. He is succeeding beyond his wildest dreams.

In regards to education, I’d say someone just took a look at the textbooks. They will tell you a lot about how a society is slanting things. Does anyone here remember the hullabaloo over the Japanese history texts? The complete lack of any mention of the Japanese atrocities in Asia during their colonial period caused uproar in both Korea and China. Russia is not the completely closed society that it was during the Soviet period. The goverment is secretive but you can find out tons just by talking to people. I knew a couple of people stationed at the U.S. embassy in Moscow during the cold war. They were told not to talk to people on the street. If they did, the person they had spoken to would be picked up and interrogated by the KGB almost immediately. Russia has not turned back into that.

Agreed, DrC, and now that polarity of US vs THEM is being played out by the opportunists as a religious war, Christian/Islamic instead of Soviets/U.S.
Have to keep the war machine spinning at high RPMs with plenty of $ to feed the (chicken?)hawks and their constituents, wouldn’t be the same war-profiteering opportunities otherwise, Pakistan may be next on the agenda, Iran perhaps?
We’ll continue to feed that war machine even as the infrastructure our economy is based on continues to fall apart, disaster capitalism at it’s best, what’s left of the Soviet Union must be greatly pleased.
If McPain had made it into office I’m betting we’d have already crossed into one or both of those countries by now “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran”, we all know the song.
