the injections are in fact gruesomely cruel. the first one paralyzes the person and briefly sedates, then the second one causes the heart to stop - meaning heart attack -
it’s the same combo used in euthanizing your dying pet
my question is why don’t they use something like morphine first - especially for your dying pet

I really don’t think saying he was “bad” conveys the depth of his actions

Yeah, they don’t bother waiting to see if you’re guilty or not. But hey, it’s not about stopping crime, it’s about making someone pay!

Lethal injections are just sad attempts at cleaning up capital punishment’s image. Get a guy in a lab coat and all of a sudden it seems more sophisticated.

It is quit ironic how the liberals do not trust the government on the justice department side but they trust the government on the health care system.

Gee, that makes a lot of sense.

Actually, Donna, his name is Mr. Broom… Romell Broom. And when are you going to learn how to draw breasts? Here’s the story if you all are interested… http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/16/romell-broom-execution-ren288256.html

Oppose death penalty on cost, errors in court process, and the fact we don’t usually “off” the right people. If we do it, go back to firing squad or hanging only- if it was good enough for the founding fathers (or soldiers) it IS humane, right? Popping the head off during hanging, BTW, IS quick and lethal, so no problem.
Also, criminal law is NOT trusting government, but trusting lawyers, and a jury of “peers”, which given today’s culture, especially from the right, brings to mind “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest”.
It was “W” who gleefully executed Carla Fay Tucker when almost the whole world called for commuting her sentence to life. Now a right wingnut prosecutor is wasting California’s money to go after Roman Polanski for a 32 year old NON CONVICTION for STATUTORY rape, when even the “victim” is saying drop it.
THAT is the kind of right-wing “justice” that makes me really, really, nervous, not “libs”.

dtroutma,
You are saying it is ok for a liberal to molest a 13 year old girl then run off to France for 32 years. The liberal sends some hush money to the molested girl. (By the way in some of the comments in the past someone stated France was conservative.)
Then this same person goes to a country and is arrested for this.
I guess it is OK for a democrat senator to belong to the KKK as long as he apologizes for it.
It is also OK for a democrat senator to get drunk, wreck a car, someone dies, go back to the party then a hotel. The next day when the police are their states various stories.
Now lets put the scenario on a conservative. What if a republican senator belonged to the KKK. What if a Republican congressman or any elected republican official rapped a girl and got caught? What if it was a well know conservator writer, evangelist or radio personality? Would 32 years be enough?
I will let you know what liberals and democrats would do if he was considered a conservative. They would call for lynching or lethal injection. If they tried 18 times to execute him they would attempt 18 more and if this did not work they would just break out the revolver and put this person out of their misery. Then use this same person as an example when the sins of Clinton, Obama, Kennedy’s or any democrat is brought up.
Then Obama would say, it really hurted me to do this, but it was better for the country. To make my conscience feel better I have pardoned all the life sentence ax murders, rapist and terrorist. They are now on the streets, I will be given a message on acceptance and the schools are starting tomorrow to instruct the students to love these ex convicts and let them know their parents are red necks if they do not approve of this.
In Canada Dr. Cansuck is going to start a class on acceptance of convicts and how they should of fled America for the Canadians prison.

Striper, you are caught in this weird delusion that Democrats are the problem. And you actually believe that Republicans are better people. Actually, they ALL suck. Both Democrats and Republicans applaud capital punishment, and both political groups contain members who have no regard for the law, their constituents, or the Constitution they pledged an oath to defend. These two political parties are the decoration on either side of a slug coin… and they’re both totally worthless, and interchangeable! Also, your opinions would contain far more gravity and would be more worthy of respect if you would bother to spell correctly.

I’m against the death penalty for philosophical reasons, not for ethical or humanitarian ones.
What is a punishment? Something bad that happens to you because you did wrong, that wouldn’t happened if you had behaved correctly OR the privation of something good that you would have kept if you behaved correctly; bad drivers get tickets (usually), good ones don’t. Thieves can be deprived of liberty (ie, put to jail), good people can’t (definitions of “good” vary from a society to another, but that’s not what we are talking about here). Good dogs get milkbones, bad dogs don’t.
BUT, no matter how good, everyone will die. Innocent often more painfully than guilty ones.
Death is not a punishment, it is a part of life.
As long as we will consider death a punishment, something only for bad guys and not a part of life for everyone (consciously or unconsciously, that’s what death penalty civilizations all seem to think), it will be proof that there’s something about death we just don’t get and accept.

re Polanski: I have to part company with some of the posters on Polanski. It doesn’t matter to me if it was 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40 years ago, Polanski has to answer for his actions with a 13-year-old girl. To drop it now is to reward running away, and would create two standards of justice: one for regular folks and another for famous directors with enough money to skip the country.
It also doesn’t mater that the now grown woman says it should be dropped and forgotten. Sexual crimes against 13-year-olds are prosecuted on behalf of the people of the country as well as the victim.
CNN is reporting that a few years ago, a judge practically issued an invitation to Polanski to return to the US and have his sentence be considered time served and still Polanski didn’t return. No one is above the law, and his crime, IMHO, was serious …. no 13-year-old consents to this type of sex with a much older, famous man. The woman has said she said no repeatedly, said she was sick and wanted to go home, then chose not to physically fight Polanski when he persisted. Reeks of a crime to me.

If Polanski is proven guilty, he should get the appropriate sentence by law. Are we actually debating something here?

Hey Stripper that conservative would get a standing ovation the next time the repo congress got together. Then he would resign as a senator/representative and work for a lobbying firm.
