    Then they would state how great a job Ted Kennedy did fighting for these causes. They then would dilute it down to say he was a good man and help the less fortunate.

    This bill has already passed the house. The democrats for it and the republicans against it. The democrats in the senate had it added to the defense bill in order to get it passed. If the republicans vote against it the democrats and the media will start running ads calling them anti military. You know the drill or at least should.     The bill is S. 909. Here is some information on it.

    Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Florida, admitted from the House Floor that the latest “hate crimes” bill put 547 acts of sexual deviancies compiled by the American Psychiatric Association, which he referred to as “all of these ‘philias’ and fetishes and ‘isms’” on the same level of elevated protection as “race … religion … gender … or disability.”

    From what I can see, H.R. 1913 only says the Feds will assist local law enforcement agencies in investigating violent crimes if they are:

    “…motivated by prejudice based on the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim, or is a violation of the State, local, or tribal hate crime laws.”
    (Sec 3.A.1.c)

    I find it to be redundant, really, as all violent crimes should be investigated and prosecuted to their full extent. I feel there is something about “Thou shalt not kill (or maim, or hurt, or incapacitate…)” that it should apply to everybody.

    Some people, however, seem to feel otherwise.

    striper, you have got to be just plain nuts. Aside from that, your condemnations of S 909 are invalid. Whether you think it’s necessary or not (and that *is* a valid debate), it does not do the silly things you claim. Here is the official summary of S909.

    4/28/2009–Introduced.
    Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act - Adopts the definition of “hate crime” as set forth in the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (i.e., a crime in which the defendant intentionally selects a victim or, in the case of a property crime, the property that is the object of the crime because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, or sexual orientation of any person). Authorizes the Attorney General to:
    (1) provide state, local, or tribal law enforcement agencies with technical, forensic, prosecutorial, or other assistance in the investigation or prosecution of violent crimes and hate crimes; and
    (2) award grants to assist such agencies with the extraordinary expenses associated with the investigation and prosecution of hate crimes. Authorizes the Office of Justice Programs to award grants to state, local, or tribal programs designed to combat hate crimes committed by juveniles. Authorizes appropriations to the Department of Justice (DOJ), including the Community Relations Service, for FY2010-FY2012 to prevent and respond to hate crime acts. Amends the federal criminal code to prohibit willfully causing bodily injury to any person because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of such person. Amends the Hate Crimes Statistics Act to expand data collection and reporting requirements under such Act to include:
    (1) crimes manifesting prejudice based on gender and gender identity; and

    All the conservative groups are stating the information I have posted. This time it came from the American Family Association.
    If you believe in what I have posted or not, it does not matter. But, I do have one questions for you. If it is already against the law to do anything to anybody regardless. Why does the government lead by and written by the democrats need to call these certain perverts out and make a special law for them. And then have with money available for prosecution?

    Why not make a law if any black man calls a white man a honkey or cracker a federal offense?
    What if a black man attacks a white man make it a federal offense?

    It sounds awkward but it happens all the time.

    What if a white man calls a black man a racial slur or, oh that is already protected under the hate crimes act.

    So I ask you are your nuts or does any of this make sense?

    It’s perfectly legal for a white man to call a black man anything he wants - and vice versa. That’s freedom of speech. That would be entirely UNAFFECTED by S909.

    Whether it’s a worthwhile law or not, (and as I said, that’s debatable), it would only apply if some other law is violated in conjunction with it. For example, vandalism is illegal. This weekend down on Long Island vandalism was committed against a church with predominantly hispanic members. That’s illegal, I think we can all agree. But the vandalism was in the form of racial slurs with implied threats (essentially saying that hispanics didn’t belong and would be driven out). S 909 would not make the vandalism any more illegal but would add to be punishment because of the racist nature and reason for the vandalism.

    The same is true with battery. If you beat someone up, it’s illegal. The law would simply make the punishment more severe if the beating was motivated by racial, sexual or some other form of group hatred.

    By the way, I do not think that being gay makes you a pervert. Sorry you do. But the reason for the law is because minority groups are easy to pick on (there are fewer of them, they don’t have as much power) - so I believe the point of the law is to say, if you pick on the especially powerless because they belong to that powerless and often despised group, you deserve and extra helping of whack-upside-the-head.

    Let me try to explain somethings to you. Let’s say a Jew’s car breaks down in Selma Alabama, on a Saturday night. He walks to a store to make a phone call. As he walks past a Bar on the way, some guys come out and start pushing him around cause he has a funny looking hat and curls. They call him Christ killer and Jew boy. Their having fun beating the hell out of him. Then things get out of hand and they light the guy on fire and he dies. Small town sheriff comes around, and he knows the “Good ‘O Boys, one of them is his brother-in-law. Sheriff says the man died cause he was smoking with a can of gas even though his head is cracked and has some broken bones.

    Now the federal government can step in, It’s now a FEDERAL hate crime. No more local cops, sweeping it under the rug. This will end those days.

    This helps you STRIPER. No more burning down “The Church Of Nut’s” cause the town folks don’t like you.
    In the south, theres like 10 Church’s burnt down every month.

    They dragged an old black man, with a chain, behind a truck until his head fell off, and were mad that he got blood on the chain.

    A 20 year old guy was beaten unconscious, then tied him naked with barbed wire, to a barbed wire fence and left him to freeze to death. Not that he did anything, just that he was gay.

    There are places that the local law just dont care what happens to some people. They dont care if their house, car, or Church get vandalized or even burnt down. This will help put a stop to that.

    If I bring my shiny white self to downtown St.Louis and get beaten up and killed by black youths while their parents and neighbors watch, laughing and calling me “cracker”, would the perpetrators be charged with an “hate” crime? Probably not - which points out the inherent injustice and non-necessity of the “hate crimes” bill. Let’s make our congress-people do something useful while they are in Congress, like lock the Chambers’ doors and go home.

    By the way, striper77, I’m holding the DSM-IV in front of me right now. The American Family Association is lying about the list of “mental disorders”. Homosexuality is nowhere on the list. Neither are bisexuality, transsexuality, prostitution, or heterosexuality (odd that the AFA would put this one on a list of disorders). Since 1974, the APA has not considered these to be mental disorders.

    So I’m calling BS on your source. I guess they weren’t counting on any intelligent people with access to the DSM-IV reading their mendacious posting. I’m not willing to entertain anything coming from such lying bigots.
