A Modest Proposal was a satirical essay written by Jonathan Swift in which he argued we should deal with the poor (London’s, I believe) by eating their children rather than having them hang out with their poor mothers begging all day. Do I have it right?

Swift’s “A Modest Proposal”, is a satirical essay, published in 1729. It was prompted by English oppression of the Irish. Several social problems could be resolved if Irish infants could be sold to the English as a culinary “delicacy”.

    Close, cdward.

thanks, cdward and charliekane. The more things change, they more they stay the same, eh?

However, I don’t think California has any choice to make some rather drastic cuts. What one would hope is the first thing would do is eliminate the scammers and those who play the system. I’m sure people will be hurt by cuts.

With a deficit of $24 billion, nothing is going to be easy. I don’t know where the state ranks in social service type of payments, but it used to be near the top and urban legend had it that people would come here from other states for the benefits. That’s not sustainable.

The legislators and Governor(s) have really mismanaged the state’s finances.
