There is no logic to her cartoon. Whales wouldn’t be able to pick out a beach if they were affected by the sonar.

I like this cartoon. Perhaps the critics just didn’t really “get it.” Why the need to be so unkind? It is one thing to criticize the cartoon itself, but quite another to insult the artist gratuitously! If you don’t care for her work, don’t look at it!

Even the Navy guys knew they didn’t need to use the extremely high power, and deadly, sonar in the areas, and for the uses, the Bush DOD was pushing for. It had nothing to do with “defense” and everything to do with DOD (and Cheney) having dominion over even the natural world, no matter the damage. Sonar CAN be used with simple cautions and not be as deleterious to whales etc. No mention was ever made in the argument of how effective hydrophones are in identifying “bad guys”.

I don’t think I feel quite as harshly toward the toon. Perhaps it’s not spot on, but the sentiment is at least laudable. As dtroutma says, there are ways for the Navy to do what they need to do without overdoing it to the detriment of the whales. My sense is, and I say this with some surprise, she just wants to cut the whales a break from all the artificial and damaging noise our ships create.

I agree with devee. I don’t agree with the cartoon, but could anyone here do better?
D@mn, the dog played with my account settings again.

it’s OK if we hold differing opinions. In fact, like cdward, I like the commentary of this toon, as I said. (I’ll take the whales’ rights over harsh tactics by Navy).
As an editorial cartoonist, I think Barstow is quite weak, and I think others have agreed in past posts. But, be that as it may, even when I like her commentary, I can still believe she’s not a good editorial toonist. Compare her to some of the greats, like Oliphant and Conrad, and others here (Bennett comes to mind). In fact, I seldom agree with Ramirez’s slant or bias, but his ability to create an “editorial” comment with a cartoon is excellent.
and sooky/CF, I have NO ability to draw/create an editorial toon, thus no claim I’d do better, that’s not the issue.
It’s OK if others find Barstow’s work more deserving of the “editorial” status.

I wonder if Donna Barstow looks at or even cares what this space says about her cartoons.
