Julie Larson began writing The Dinette Set comic in 1990, then called Suburban Torture, offering a satire on middle class culture. The Dinette Set became syndicated in 1997. When asked where Julie gets all of her ideas, she admits there is only one way to write a daily comic: write about what you know. "I make no bones about who’s really talking in The Dinette Set," says Julie, who is writer, director and cast of The Dinette Set. "If we can’t make fun of ourselves, who will?"

Burl’ll be just as happy as a pig in slops.

Burl doesn’t really DO anything as it is. Unlike my man who was working today while I was entertained by my daughter and family. We just got back from WWE around 12 (grandson had as a present). I think I’ll go to bed now.

Yep, the fun never stops at the Penny’s house.

Burl doesn’t work even when he goes to work so what would he have to retire FROM? Yet look at the jealous expression on his face!

O…M….G….

It brings back memories of the flea market….
way back when…
Retired couples, living or just traveling in 5th wheels or small motor homes…
both silver haired…
selling coins or dolls or Avon bottles…
She crocheted these hats…. he always wore one…
She had on a short apron with pockets….. put the dollar bills in one pocket, bigger bills in another.
(At least one woman I met made beer can wastebaskets and lamp shades too.)
And they had license plate holders or magnetic signs with their CB “handles” on them…

Absent some sort of miracle, in under two years Bob is going to take the easy way out and leave Sue a widow. She might not even notice. Puppies may come and go but bridge and bunko live on.

@SusanSunshine
This is Crustwood…..Bob got issued his “uniform” of the hat, a large fanny pack, sandals with black socks and a tuneup lobotomy when he retired.

Joy has to take Burl to KMart. She’s too moronic to figure out the exact dimensions of the strainer and Burl has to make sure she doesn’t overspend on the “Deluxe” model.

This strip makes me shiver with terror. This is going to be me and the mister in 4-5 years. Him doing ‘nothing’ and coming with me to do the shopping. We’ll be standing in front of the meat case, holding up store traffic, while he examines every cellophaned pack of beef on the shelf.

Retire? I’m 60 now. According to my accountant I should have enough money to live out my years if I work unitl I’m 103.

My wife had a friend who put a sign in her kitchen, “Retirement: Twice as much husband, half as much money.”

How fast JOY and BURL have switched back to short sleves……
.
This is another boring-plain backbground comic setting. I picture an empty chase lounge with 2 foot tall grass and overgrown bushes and a house that BOB needs to paint. ! ! !
