    Or he can invent it, file a patent for it, find out that some company already holds a broad-based patent for some design aspect (rectangular screens? Ours!), get sued into oblivion, and lose the rights to his own invention because he couldn’t afford top-tier corporate lawyers of his own.

    No it’s not. Your stake in the business is usually determined by how long you’ve worked there. The older workers that find their way into management tend to monopolize the profits of the business for themselves, shutting out younger ones.
