Those came out when I was a kid. One time I was calling someone, got a wrong number. It was one of those machines that answered. The guy said the number, so I knew right away. Later I got to thinking. His tone of voice was so smug, like he thought he was a bigshot because he had a machine to answer HIS phone. My friends were told….He got a lot of prank calls. This, fortunately, was before Caller ID.

Dilbert, you’re an engineer, not a philosopher!

Wonder what message Sheldon from Big Bang Theory would leave?
Or did they cover that? I haven’t seen all of the episodes.

Sheldon probably has Caller ID liked to a reverse directory search to generate a message along the lines of:
“Good morning/afternoon/evening [caller name], this is Dr Sheldon Cooper. I’m doing something far too important, which you wouldn’t inderstand, to be able to answer the phone at the moment, but if you leave a message on this digital answering machine, which I have customised to my personal requirements, I’ll consider calling you back if what you say interests me. You have ten seconds or 100 words, whichever is shorter.”

I like the new answering machines with a pre-recorded message so no more complexly stupid messages. Best of all though is Call Blocking, the best invention since the telephone itself.

Man, I just love that show!

I have an answering machine that speaks in 3 languages: English, Spanish and French. I use the French message and people hang up right away. It’s great!

Good first line.

I always got a kick out of the people who would tell me, ’Don’t say, “I’m not home right now” on your message because that way a burglar would know that you’re not home and then break into your house.
They REALLY said that.

That’s what Facebook is for

I’m not sure why that’s laughable. Maybe unlikely, but not laughable. But that’s one reason mine says “I’m not available to take your call right now.” Also because it’s my cell phone, so it doesn’t really matter that I’m home or not.

Snerk! I can hear him saying that in his mind!
