Acupuncture needles are long, but extremely thin. They’re much thinner than the needles used to draw blood or give an injection. Calling them “large” is inaccurate.

I actually find it very relaxing! You can’t really even feel the needles going in most of the time. Lying on my back with nice environmental music and Chinese herb scents, I feel relaxed. And the acupuncture itself does work — but only best if it is true classical acupuncture (as distinguished from “traditional” acupuncture, which is something different). There is definitely something to it. It does have lasting beneficial effects.
