Dilbert’s an engineer? I thought he was a computer programmer.

Until the 80s, engineers had a soldering-iron in one hand and a screwdriver in the other… today, if a computer needs repair, it’s cheaper to replace it – software engineers are glorified programmers.

Real engineers do not recognize the term “software engineer.”
Dilbert is a real engineer, IIRC.

A woman at work was bragging about her son who had just become an engineer. ‘A civil engineer?’, I asked. She looked at me disgustedly and said, No, that’s the easiest kind of engineer you can become’. I don’t remember what kind of engineer he actually did become.
