A wonderful remembrance, Mike and Joe

I know i posted this last year, I hope you do not mind.

They were there to answer duties call

That day we saw the twin towers fall

They knew the job was full of danger

But it was theirs, to help friend or stranger

To answer a call, they could not pick and choose

Though their lives they might even lose

Hearth and home, they had to leave

To do, in what they believed

A quiet morning, to be had by some

Nothing much but routine to be done

But when the alarm sounded, they sallied forth

To those soaring towers, both south and north

The first responders, from throughout the city came

All knowing things would never again be the same

Smoke and flame, high up in the sky

No time to hesitate, no need to question why

Flame and smoke poured from above

But no-one had to give them a shove

Into the building they went with all their gear

Things had to be done, no time for fear

    Fire, police, EMS’s too

All knew the job that they had to do

Up they went, seemingly without a care

People were in dire need of their help up there

Through the flames, smoke and dust

They did the things they knew they must

Then came those terrible, ominous sounds

That heralded the towers crashing to the ground

The dust and smoke are all settled now

In prayer and remembrance our heads do bow

For all who perished on that fateful day

We honor the price that you did pay.

I hadn’t really thought about it, but the two towers being done as simple rectangles in today’s strip also look like a pair of one’s. As the 11th anniversary of that terrible and tragic day, it serves as a dual message. Kinda neat in a way.

Just as nice this year as last year wndrwrthg, and just as fondly appreciated. A truly great poem that deserves a place of honor on some memorial someplace.

I recently saw a political ad here in Connecticut in which a candidate advocated hiring more police and firefighters. To this someone made sniped, “just what we need, more union workers.”
    I was furious.
I responded that he may see police and firefighters that way, but I see them as the first responders, true heroes who without hesitation, run INTO danger to save total strangers.
I also told him he did get one thing right —
They are “just what we need.”
God bless them all, every day.

Thanks, Mike, Joe, and Shelley, for a beautiful tribute.
And thanks to the GoComics colorist, for a truly splendid job.
    Very nicely done, all.

First Moon Maid and now poetry by wndrwrthg? It just gets better and better! :) Seriously, that is an amazing piece, wndrwrthg, and well-deserving of all the kudos. Thank you for such a fine tribute to all the heroes who died eleven years ago today. I remember well all your great work during the final year of Locher, and how it made coming to this page so fun. Loved your recent ode to Moon Maid, too, and look forward to another one about her sometime. In the meantime, you can study these pics for inspiration.

Gotta add, just found out our old friend Jerry “The King” Lawler suffered a heart attack Monday night. He’s resting in a hospital now. As always, the hope is for a full recovery. (If you would like to see “Jerry King” again, I’d suggest starting with the March 3rd strip.)
