Tracy declares, “We’re helpless.” We already knew that! The tiger has reached gigantic proportions now, but it appears that Barb Els will be able to calm him down. I’m glad Ennen’s back to assist Tracy in doing absolutely nothing! Well, he does offer play-by-play commentary sometimes. It appears that the end of this tale is nowhere in sight. Come back, Pig on Wheels! All is forgiven!

So, Barb Els was going to let Cyber eat Tracy and whatshername, a plan that almost certainly would have ended with her beloved pet tiger being killed and cut open for the collection of Tracy-scraps. Makes loads of sense.

    Sigh. fffffffffffffff.

While we ponder on Tracy’s need for additional “back up” we get some fresh insight into a bunch of importers who started a Circus and an Owner/Ringmaster who knows that the Tiger hasn’t been fed, yet is somehow blithly unaware that his strongman lady was also the Tiger trainer.

And the Pig on wheels who is also a member of PETA is keeping a close eye on these silly developments which will somehow continue for another TWO weeks !

Note to police department: Fire Dick Tracy. Do it now. You need a detective who does something other than wet his pants and sob helplessly while criminals have their way around him.

Dick Locher needs to go too. His obvious dislike of police has ruined this once great strip (I remember the old days).

Bring back the Pig on Wheels. Maybe it can solve the crime and arrest the bad guys. Certainly it won’t be any worse at it than DT is, and probably won’t be as big an embarrassment to the force.

    Question:

    “Barb, what are you doing?”

    Answer:

    “Cyber, baby!”

    Ah, hah, hah, hah!

    From Urbandictionary.com:

    cyber (verb)

Cyber-sex. Online roleplaying mimicking sexual intercourse.
“She wants to cyber with that loner.”

Tracy completely lost his usual hard-bitten composure. His been bug-eyed from fear for weeks now while desperately commenting on what is going on around him. He’s an emotional wreck.

We’ve never seen his eyes this clearly for 70 years. His trademark eyes are narrowed slits, even in the worst circumstances. Is this really the most terrifying adventure you’ve been in, Tracy? Tougher than battling Pruneface, Flattop and 88 keys, because then you didn’t lift as much as an eyebrow. Now it’s Garfield-eyes every day.

Locher has a consistent habit of having the hero of this strip be helpless. I am starting to believe those who maintain that TMS is out to destroy this strip. Reading this is like reading a Superman comic where he lies squirming in front of Kryptonite for 20 pages until some little leaguer rescues him. Actually come to think of it that happened in a Superman story once, but it was much better done.

No. No! This is Dick Freaking Tracy, bleeep it! If there’s one thing I have come to expect from this new, horrible Dick Tracy, it’s a family unfriendly death at the end of each story arc! I DEMAND to see Cyber the Tiger (why Cyber?) eat Pops! Preferably not in one bite!

It’s true, Tracy has turned into a cowering, frightened character far from what anybody would consider a hero.

  25. jumbobrain

    jumbobrain said, 2 months ago

It’s kind of interesting, isn’t it? How Locher has made Dick Tracy a passive, helpless observer rather than an action-oriented hero? This story is a particular low, having a clown put him in a tiger cage at a crime scene, he’s gone from squealing “we’re cat food” to whimpering “we’re helpless.” This character bears only superficial resemblance to the crimebusting detective of years past, and it’s a sad, sad comparison.

What is going on here? I mean, the strip is poorly written and drawn, sure. But Tracy’s passivity goes beyond just sloppy continuity and art. It seems like a conscious decision to emasculate the guy.

A psychologist could make much of this helpless-hero paradigm. But whatever it means, it makes for one lame, boring comic strip and I sure wish things would change.

Panel 1 - We already know Mr Slops is in the cage with the tiger
Panel 2 - We already know DT is outside the cage and is doing nothing about the situation
Panel 3 - We already know Barb Els is entering the cage to deal with the tiger

Why was this strip even published??!!?? What a waste!!!

Everything I was thinking about Dick’s coment “We’re Helpless” has been said. This is surely not the same Dick Tracy who faced down the Mob and other sorted crooks from the 30’s and 40’s. How sad. I need to dig out a book I picked up years ago with strips from back then when he faced Ms Pruneface.

And that the illegal arms company was composed of unusual people that would immediately become circus performers and all go to work for the same circus!

Also notice that this circus has no workers other than a handful of performers, one elephant, one tiger, one pig on wheels… no behind-the-scenes maintenance personnel.

Some say his father was a Virginia ham
And his mother was composed entirely of Spam
Though the comments were hurtful and cruel
He would show them all he was nobodies fool
One morning the circus called his name
So he left the sty to seek his fame
His happiness was expressed as grunts and squeals
When he found out he was getting a set of wheels
Oh how sharp, bitchen and wicked he looked
You could see right away he was no shnook
Yet fame was to be an elusive star
Even though he traveled near and far
Down on his luck and stifling a sob
He started working for a freaky mob
Sideshow gigs and dealing cr ap
Was this really where it was at
    Then came that fateful day
When Louise Trapeze they did slay
At first there was just a little mention
But soon he was the center of attention
There came calls for him to be a hero
Because Tracy was nothing but a big fat zero
A bright spot was he in the gathering gloom
A precious flower with a fragrant bloom
As the calls for him grew ever louder
His parents just couldn’t be prouder
The star of the circus the talk of the town
People pointed and waved when he rolled around
Glory was to be his in the days ahead
Tracy was forgotten and left for dead

  42. Michael McMillan

I had to mention that stuff in my last post. Somebody else brought up the giant robot story, and in truth I’ve been thinking of that story half the day. That’s where I first saw Tracy cower and cry while criminals did what they liked.

Now, if a guy like me behaves like that while dangerous criminals are about, you might disrespect me but you would half-way understand it. I’m a truck driver, not a trained officer. Tracy is a trained officer, and as such you expect him to show some bravery. Real cops never behave like this, at least any of the cops I’ve had to deal with.

There was one character from the robot story you really had to respect. He knew what he had to do and he did it, though it was at the cost of his own life. Bring back the little robot— we need him. That guy had crust.
