Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

In the first panel, it looks like Fee Fi is giving Mr Pops a wet willie with his thumb.

This strip is really dumb
Be it the writing
Or be it the art
It has the stench of a juicy…
Three more panels we see today
Three that does our trust betray
Malformed hands, a broken pinky
The art today is particularly stinky
The dialog gives us a great big pain
Seems all our hopes were in vain
The pig on wheels is truly a sight
It gives evil clowns an awful fright
It has a shake and has a shimmy
That’s cause it’s sporting a Hemi
Meanwhile back a the scene of the action
Mr. Pops is a little slow with his reaction
Caught in the clutches of the giants iron grip
He had a feeling he was going to
Such a sad ending to his evil career
He had the misfortune to have to appear
Here in this disaster of which it is said
Would be better for all if it were dead

This is starting to remind me of that James Bond movie ‘Octopussy’, when James Bond is dressed like a clown and he uses a circus troupe to defeat the international terrorists, making the once lauded double-oh 7 look like an utter twat in clown makeup while the acrobats and elephants do all the work.
I wonder if Ian Flemming’s estate could sue Locher for copywright infringement here

Oh boy! My friend Kamio just shared with me the following link, which is NSFW (not safe for work), due to the constant swearing:
http://screwattack.com/AVGN/2008/DickTracy
Notice how every one of this guy’s complaints about Dick Tracy the video-game perfectly mirror all of your complaints about Dick Tracy the comic strip! From the inane premise to the shoddy police work to the endless, excruciating monotony, to the bizarre artwork, complete with characters whose appearances mysteriously change from one moment to the next, to the continuity errors, it’s all there!
The game was officially based on the Warren Beatty movie, but it sure seems to me like it really brings the current comic strip to life.
If a tepid, frustrating, endless living death can be thought of as life, that is.
It almost makes you wanna check and see if Locher and Brozman were the lead programmers!

Does Fee Fi stop bullets too?
LudwigVonDrake said, 18 days ago
^ No.
The artwork is so poor. Does anyone look at this stuff before it’s published?
avatarjk137 said, 18 days ago
As usual, the artwork is piss-poor, and it’s not intellectual, but today we get to see a circus giant lift a clown into the air by his neckless neck (?) and hold him up in what is clearly preparation for a professional wrestling move. If Pops gets a backbreaker performed on him before he’s thrown into the tiger cage to be eaten, some of Locher’s sins must be forgiven.
Of course, I’m sure he can screw even this up.

Elxia, any similarity between the movie ‘octopussy’ and the Ian Fleming short story is purely coincidental

Who wants to bet we will be treated to another whole week of this stinker? Odds are we will still be seeing Mr. Pops and crew next week at this time.
Joe Allen Doty said, 18 days ago
Who, what, when, where, why?
Jim Brozman, the strip’s artist, needs to either be replaced or have someone do quality control and tell him to consistently draw this strip.
But, there are some popular comic strips which look they were drawn by children with no art training whatsoever.
nighthawks comment reminds me of fellow students in a college art class which I took as an undergraduate.
They told one student that what she drew had been done before. But, the art instructor told them that if she had never seen that done before, it was original art in her case.

Hmmmmm,,,Sydney & Matthew go silent around the same time. Think they went to Joe’ Doty’s Dude ranch together?
Some quality bonding time? Or is this a job for CSI?

I wondered how everyone was getting up there!
Araldite said, 17 days ago
Why is everybody focused on Pops when Barb Ells is the murderer still wandering about with a gun?? Locher has cleverly shifted everyone’s focus away from the real culprit.

By the way, I have NEVER been on a dude ranch.
But, I have been on a real ranch. I didn’t work there; but, we lived on a neighboring farm.

The clown would have been shot when he pulled out his gun. The cops would have opened fire. He would qualify as an elevator counter weight. The story would have ended there. But we are in the Locher Zone. So the complete lack of reality or logic drags on.

I’m still here, Bassmanbob.
A daily strip (which I write and draw), a thrice weekly strip (which I draw and help plot), plus two other upcoming projects are keeping WAY busy.
Plus I still have a day job!
