Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

Perhaps the first grade kids at the local elementary school spend 4 minutes at the start of every English lesson brainstorming ways of blending Dr. Seuss with Dick Tracy, then Locher thinks it’s Pulitzer-winning dialogue and uses it each day in his strips.
That’s the only rational idea I can come up with as to why grown men can’t write comic strip dialogue without sounding like they watch too much poorly dubbed anime cartoons.

So Tracy was “investigating” a murder, the cops WERE there and now they all left to be called back??? Yeah, this story makes sense. NOT!

Now the clown’s voice appears to be coming from inside the tent and the tent is smaller again! I thought they were outside. How long does it take for the police to respond to the clown’s call?

LOCHER’S CRAZY “CONTRADICTION” CORMER !
What are the “odds” of a Female Assassian having the skills, courage and know how to “impersonate” a trapeze artist ? A less demanding job to get near the victim seems far more logical
It suggests a Writer “making-it-all-up” each morning as he goes along without any well thought master plot.
As we have seen it’s a lazy and embarrassing metodology, one almost certain to throw up stupid contradictions, massive flaws and a reputation that the Author despite long side-by-side “exposure” to the best Writing talent doesn’t have a clue what he is doing.
No new Author could get a new strip in with a flawed storyline like this Circus tale. Editors assesing it might well wonder if the Author had ALL his “marbles”! (?)
And if he recognizes his shortfalls. powers on, apparently UNCARING about QUALITY output in a decrepit, unproductive manner !
And you have to wonder if TMS is satisfied with the current “apology” called Dick Tracy (?)

I think it would make for more interesting reading to see Macy having an affair with Della. Or, even the tiger.

One thing you have to give DT credit for: his resilience. So soon (in real time, not Locher panel time) after being rescued, and he’s making pathetic puns already.

I had an Unckle named Howard, thin as a swizzle stick and who’s idea in good looking women were females of a very FAT variety. The plumper the better ! He saw them as “comfort” zones.
Perhaps Dick is a closet version of Howard (?) That may be part of the reason for sending Tess and Bonnie home ;-p.

As a new week begins we take our measure
And indulge ourselves this guilty pleasure
To Tracy we turn with bated breath
Hoping the detective has met his death
An honorable death for us to see
Is better than this monstrosity
That has trapped this comic strip hero
And reduced him to a big fat zero
Today we are treated to much the same
Insipid artwork and the dialog’s inane
The little things we see can be overlooked
But the mistakes seen here would fill a book
These are not errors of minor commission
But the sins of ineptitude and endless repetition
Other old strips have been retooled and been reborn
But the chances of that happening here are very forlorn
They say that old wrthgs never learn
So come tomorrow I shall return

There are still a few of us who want to SEE it for ourselves everyday and not have some spoiler come here and ruin it.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sydney, I’m in agreement with Matthew on this one. I want to be surprised, even if it causes me to groan in agony over the foolishness of the strip. I also have no problem with Matthew providing a link to his comic. Others provide links to their personal sites and no one complains. Let’s all try to be fair.
Peace.

Carlo: Good stuff! The car drawing in particular is excellent. Your English syntax is a little off (though it’s much better than my Italian, so don’t feel bad). If you’d like to contact me offline I can make translation suggestions (my fiancee speaks a bit of Italian and so could help).
Sydney: as far as I’m concerned you can spoil away. The only suspense in this strip any more is how impossibly stupid it’s going to get. And now I’m all excited to know a classic villain is going to get put in another boring, pointless, illogical story. YAAAY
Matthew: Again, lighten up, huh? Morrow never accused you of ripping off a specific Batman story, he just poked you about the very obvious resemblance between Apollo and Dick Sprang’s Batman. If you’re denying any such resemblance, well, that’s just silly.
wndrwrthog: I appreciate that you are spending so much more time and care on these poems than Locher is in writing the strips that inspire them.

This is morrow’s exact quote:
“Where he heck is Mattie, or is he too embarassed to show up and defend his hero? Or is he too busy copying old Batman storylines for his newest venture?”
I would suggest that you get your facts straight before leaping into the fray.

wndrwrtg,
In sooth
The man doth speak the truth.
I’m not spoiling anything ! Obviously, It’s not Flattop ! Locher can’t even light up a “creative” BULB, like say, the idea of using the “Pouch” (once a Circus fat man, 1971 - never caught) in the current story. The boredom in the tale almost begs for something, a twist to fan up a little interest and douse that “apology” for a villan - Mr.Pops !
It’s all so bad, Mattie should take time off from drawing what looks like *Batman” and organize a “Retreat” in Naperville for Locher, where he and Jeff, could invite DLisagenius and Trapper John). They could ALL huddle together in misery and WEEPING, Even saying some prayers for the cruel destruction that has been (carelessly) allowed to descend on Dick Tracy these past several years !

You are absolutely correct and my most humble apologies for not having gone back to find Morrow’s exact words. It was unfair of him to accuse you of swiping old Batman storylines when in fact you’re only swiping the character design and art style.

Jumbobrain:
Perhaps you missed it when I OPENLY admitted that APOLLO is my love letter to the Dick Sprang Batman era, to Chester Gould and to Dick Locher. If you believe that my artwork comes even within hailing distance of Sprang, Gould or Locher’s…colour me flattered (and, at this point in my career, I’d say that my art has more in common with Locher than Sprang, but…)
Keep in mind, too, that I set out to do a “Golden Age” style strip, so like so many Golden Age characters, I borrowed a little from here and there and came up with my creation. I’m glad that, at least to your eyes, I’ve been successful!
Sydney:
I didn’t hear that story and I have no idea where that establishment is located. Let me go on the record to say that denying ANYBODY ANYTHING based on the colour of their skin, their race, their ethnicity, their sex, their religion, their sexual preference, their politics, or for basically any reason, is totally and completely WRONG and those that do such things should be terminated.
Sydney (again):

AND–I’m still waiting for the exact story and issue and year of the BATMAN story you claim I’m ripping off.

If Matt was a complete stranger here, linking to something completely unrelated to comics, or completely unrelated to Dick Tracy, that would be spamming.
Like him or not, he’s somebody who is a well-known regular here, and his strip definitely falls in the category of “DT-related.”
So, the inclusion of two URLs after his “MPH” signature, in my mind, does not constitute spamming, especially since one of his two strips is an ongoing topic of conversation here. That makes the URLs relevant to the topic at hand, you see, and the more relevant something is, the lower its spam quotient.
Just my two cents’ worth.

Yeah, plus Matthew takes the time to respond indignantly to every perceived slight here. Whereas Locher, Brozman and everyone at TMS never even acknowledge the truckloads of criticism ladled upon their wares every single day. That’s gotta count for something.

Matthew, just curious, but how do you put your strips together…do you use stylus & computer program or the old style ,ink on paper, wait to dry and watercolor (or colour ) I can’t imagine you are doing it the old way …drawing and painting on computer is so forgiving.
If I was doing a strip I would use two programs, one to draw up the contents of the panels and color them and then load them into ‘comic life’ to arrange them in order and put in the lettering and word balloons and color the backgrounds….really fun stuff….
so , how do YOU do it?
