Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

It has taken 2 trained law enforcement officers a week+ to look upwards. And why would there be a trapeze at that height dangling INTO a dangerous area like this? And Sunday’s panel 2 plainly shows the cage to be 1. Square and 2. Topless. Once again, objects change shape as needed in ….The Locher Zone. And of course, the clown and his cohorts in evil did not notice the escape route either.

It’s magic, I tell you!
(Or really lousy story writing…)

“Ye Gods!”, Ennen says as she discovers this escape route. Tracy’s speechless. Fee Fi tells ‘em what to do. I suppose this tale is nearing conclusion… possibly before Thanksgiving. I’ll miss the pig on wheels.

The pig on wheels magically appears in the cage, so that they have something to stand on…

Well, there’s only enough room on that trapeze for one person. Guess who it’s gonna be?

Panel One:
Agent Ennen’s eye looks like a “Gold Fish” cracker.
Panel Two: Are we inside the cage, looking up at its ceiling, our are we outside, looking down at the roof, which has a trapeze sticking out of it, M.C. Escher style?

Way to go Pig on Wheels! You’ll be the hero in this suspenseful (neverending) epic.

It’ll turn into a “doublewide” before our very eyes!

I guess that makes this a dangling plot thread, huh?
Trapeeze is dangling overhead
Tracy’s filled with dread
And if he doesn’t grab it, he will soon be dead
But do we really care?
When this tripe is Locher’s fare?
Newcomers to this strip? RUN AWAY! BEWARE!
The cage has changed it’s shape
The hero’s fate in the hands of a human ape
The strain transforming the color of his face to grape
Why would someone do acrobatics in a tiger cage?
The lack of logic pushes us into a rage
I think I just felt my brain disengage.

Awesome! Really, just in the nick of time this comes to light. Not even MacGyver would have gotten out of this one.

Why would a trapeze be hanging over a tiger cage?

and let’s not forget that two days there wasn’t a roof to the cage.

Somewhere in this great nation
Comic readers cry with elation
They jump for joy and shout with glee
At the stories they get to see
But where we gather all is sadness
Here we’re tortured by this madness
Changes occur from day to day
But nothing in a credible way
Tiger and elephant, some circus freaks
We have stared at them these many weeks
The cage was square, but now is round
The errors, they seem to abound
Threatening notes were changed to ransom
The plot points became quite lissome
Cops with guns, orders to protect
People galore to suspect
The police were there, now they’re not
Perhaps they’re at the donut shop
As the days turned into weeks
Solutions he did not seem to seek
Just endless panels of talking heads
The next installment we did dread
Tiger to panther and back again
Oh my head, I need some aspirin
A situation fraught with danger
To this Tracy was no stranger
But where once he was bold and wild
Now he weeps like a little child
Yes somewhere in this great land
There are comics to beat the band
But here it’s sorrow for you and me
As we sit and lament that dick Tracy

My thought was that someone had just let the trapeze down into the cage. There may be another helper here, perhaps Louise’s partner.
My bet is that Tracy will either hoist Ennen up and then follow her, or jump up and then reach down and grab her.The strip is named “Dick Tracy” after all.He has to do something heroic here.
Either that or he will arm-wrestle her for first dibs. It would be more fun to see that.

This story just continues to be a travesty!!! As LVD just said…there was no roff over the bleeep thing! And the trapeze thing is, as Sydney has pointed out, nothing but a rip-off of the Bird Gang/Tiger trap!
Please…Editors…GET A NEW WRITER!
Oh the humanity…!

RICHARD E. LOCHER
I’ve always been curious about what that “E” in the name stood for. Yesterday, “mumbles” inadvertently revealed it to us - “ENNUI”. Seems fitting! … Boredom from lack of interest or a sense of excitement … held in contempt !
Dick “Ennui” Locher needs a DETOXIFYING treatment. There’s a Spa over in Brooklyn that does it in exotic style.. Banana tree leaves all over your back and a girl with a rolling pin to make sure some stuff goes in. It promises to rid him of addictive substances like SLOW abuse, tiresome REPETITION, and plaguing, ping pong CONTRADICTIONS that choke MOVEMENT out of his story lines.
Then to see HIS weakness for what I’ve branded “coptyright-IS”. Look in on Tracy, at an earlier time, another Tiger, see yet another upward growing cage, another trapeze for safety ! All in the Red Hawk tale, June 14 and 20, 2003 (the Archives). A time when that YESTERDAY … becomes “TODAY”!
“When it’s not ONE time … it’s TWO time !”
Easy to COPY … no time or inclination to CREATE !

If MacGyver was there I agree he would look around to find a way out.
I think DT will jump to the trapeez and assist the FBI up and out then climb out himself. I hope he calls for backup.

Carlo,
Liked what I saw on the “first look” at your new strip Frank Carter. In particular, the strip of September 29. The mid-panel has a delightful depth of vision and the art style looks Hergé and in the Tin Tin mode. Certainly the young female also supports that.
Pity though I can’t follow the full story direction due to lack of understanding Italian.
But I’d certainly like to see MORE from time to time

Carlo, I agree with Sydney that the art in your new strip brings back fond memories of Tin Tin. Not just the drawing, but also the color choices. It’s interesting to see how different this strip looks, compared to the black and white action strip you’d shown us quite some time ago.
In both cases, you have this wonderfully intricate, three-dimensional depth of field going on, but all the cross-hatched shading in the black and white comic gave it a much grittier, darker feeling.
Regardless, they’re both great. I just wish Google Language Tools worked on comics so I could read them!

Carlo,
I’ll be looking forward to the English version…meanwhile my fiancee speaks a bit of Italian so I’ll ask her to translate.
Visually though, I really like it. It evokes Herge, and Joost Swarte, both of whom are great. Good work. It goes without saying that I’d rather see you doing Dick Tracy.
Speaking of Dick, can you believe this story is going on four months now? Four long months, all in one marathon session in the big top, no action, everything revealed through dialog, plot twists careening illogically out of the blue… I can’t believe people are being paid to create this, and that any newspapers still pay for it.
Whoever is running TMS is a complete moron, to let such a singular and iconic trademark devolve into such pap.

Macy is such a wuss and wienie that he’ll jump up to catch the trapeze and tell Ennin there isn’t room for her up there. She needs to find her own trapeze. Meanwhile the tiger rears up on his hind legs and devours Macy, belches, and chokes on Macy’s implant. It cuts off the airway. The tiger keels over dead. Next story, please.
