Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

The tiger is grumpy because it has a thorn in its paw. Tracy pulls it out and gets one wish.

Is that frightened-looking guy REALLY Dick Tracy?
Wish I could talk him through this. I’d say something like, “Psst! Dick! The stupid clown didn’t disarm you. Shoot the tiger!”
Or, “You have a taser on your wrist! Tase that beast!”
Since he obviously can’t figure that out on his own.

DT tries his best not to look like a can of tuna.
So far, nobody seems to have consulted Daniel about this.
(If you have to ask what Daniel has to do with being stuck in a cage full of big cats, welll—–.)

“What’s this?” Oh, the ridiculous escape device DL has yet to think of. And can wait until at least Monday to unveil. Sunday recap, ho!

Remembering SAM CATCHEM
I’ve waited a whole week to see if Mattie would tell us ! (?) He hasn’t ! He’s a keen young student of Locher’s Dick Tracy work. He talks with ihe Author, and then enjoys talking to us with borrowed AUTHORITY – “From the horses mouth” !
I thought it would be part of his big QCTOBER 4 Announcement. But it wasn’t. Red sweater Mattie wasn’t up on his toes.
As we know, 10-4 was the 78th Anniversary of Tracy but the day before 10-3 was the FIRST Anniversary of the LAST time SAM CATCHEM appeared in the comic strip. It’s a WHOLE year now !
The new “lone-wolf”, Home addicted, sub-office status of Tracy comes back into focus. Ten months (304 days) have passed (four cases) and he’s been into HQ on only THREE occasions.
Chief Lizz has been seen in only NINE strips
Lt. Teevo in only on ONE panel !
It seems the small Major Crime squad we’ve known has been dissolved
I’m sure now that Teevo is in Homicide, operating outside, he arrives ARMED with a shoulder holster, to whip out his message reading glasses if necessary.
It seems that the small Major Crime Squad is no more. With Sam’s departure it’s like Agata Christie novel . “And then there were NONE”! Even Tracy with his newly evolved, Home Alone operating status The Major Crime Squad with it’s well loved team camaraderie in no more.
Not that it seems to matter much to HIM but Locher has been rooting out well developed(well liked) characters and replacing them with NOTHING.
Is this good for the Dick Tracy comic strip ????
And no one counts the sissy-fied message man, Teevo .
It would be good to hear Mattie’s views on this unusual development. Regression ? Or new hope for the strips future ?
Let’s hear him articulate the future “upside” if he sees one !

Sydney, he’s too preoccupied with advertising HIS strip on Liam’s site. As far as this “thriller” goes, Agent M&M’s got more huevos than Macy. By creating two unarmed cops, Locher is guilty of every moral obligation he had when he took over the strip franchise. If Gould’s family ever wonders who shot their man, they can look no further than the signature on the panel. Making a eunuch out of a national hero isn’t anything to be proud of. Maybe next week, after Tabby rips Macy’s stinky suit off, we’ll find Macy’s a trans-gender and a transvestite to boot!

Macy sez, “What’s this?” Tiger takes one sniff of Macy’s britches and gags on its own vomit. Meanwhile, Macy’s cage-mate is trying to recussitate the big cat so it can finish off Naperville’s superhero.

Dick Locher is not the artist of this strip; he is only the writer now.
The tiger did NOT change into a panther. The artist, JIM BROZMAN, merely drew the side of it which is in dim light.
He did that like some commercials where a person is seen mostly in silhouette and occasionally you see light streaks on parts of the person’s body and clothing.

morrow,
On getting SHOT I think Locher is SAFE. I can’t recall any Police Officer or Detective getting even a scratch or illness these past 17 years. Not an ilness, no hospilalization either.
Just shows how all those “TECHNIQUES” Gould used to jerk sensabilities and pull readers IN, simply have never been in the writing repertoire of the likes of Kilian or Locher and even Collins used little of it.
It tells readers why the strip is so INFERIOR today, The writers have/had only PEDESTRIAN abilities. And writing-wise Locher shouldn’t even be there. He’s like that young aeroplane bandit. Every story he writes a tale it ends up as a CRASH !
Good thing he never used those skills (or lack of them) when he was in the Air Force !

I haven’t been here in a while. I see nothing has changed including the present unbelievably lame seemingly endless story line. I keep hoping that this strip will either be retired or turned over to a competent writer and restored to some semblance of it’s former greatness.

I didn’t realize Sam has been gone that long. One year! That would have been unthinkable to Chet Gould. I never liked the idea of promoting Lizz to chief. It cut her out of the action tremendously. She always wore those sexy outfits too. Now all she wears is a dikey butch looking uniform. My apology to you gay gals you know what I mean!

I don’t know I read this story routinely not to much on commints so too many get posted but I think the strip is moving along. There is another strip committers are complaining about but to me the other one is for enterainment. Whereas DT I am not sure of entertainment since it involves crime scenes although behind times.

Bonnie and Tess are just getting back from the concession stand with a fresh bag of popcorn for Dick and now will save the day.
It’s the only plausible explanation. Everything else is pure fiction.

JOE - Brozman has been doing this for months. It saves on having to actually show any kind of detail. Quite honestly, he’s using this effect WAY too much.

False suspense again. I think I saved my post from last time he did that…. Here it is:
“Right now Locher is using what writers (those who know what we’re doing) call “false suspense.” The hero knows who’s holding the gun so there is no real suspense about it. That information is being deliberately withheld from the audience to try to fool them into feeling suspense when there isn’t any.”

Yes, and with Lizz promoted to Chief, Locher has unwittingly painted himself right into a corner.
None now, of what the Artist call, regular FEMALE RELIEF. That’s why he has to try to have Tess in so many stories to take up the “slack”. That;s why the FBI Agent was a woman ! It’s a bit of a Humbug he has to wrestle with these days. Let’s see how he handles it in the next story.
Lone Wolf and Tess again ?
You get the impression that he rushes to make changes without giving THOUGHT to potential problems.
CougarAllen said, about 1 month ago
Tiger and panther heads differ in shape as well as in color. It’s obvious Brozman is copying a picture of a panther and trying to pass it off as the tiger in shadow. He has a good picture of the front view of a tiger to copy, a lousy picture of a tiger in profile, and a good picture of a panther in profile. The front view is so good it stands out as totally wrong in the context of the rest of his drawing – and he keeps reusing it, been putting it in backgrounds ever since the beginning of this episode.

A year since Sam Ketcham, huh? That makes a little sense, at least to the degree that the last THREE MONTHS of strips have all described events presumably happening in the same evening. Maybe he went to a movie. And if he grabs a snack afterward we may not see him again till 2020.
Interesting to note, this strip gets more comments than most others on this site. And the comments are uniformly negative. And there are still (a few) newspapers paying to run Dick Tracy. Good thing for TMS those editors don’t see this site, huh?

Well the the Circus story looks like it will all be over by mid-November. The forward strips look fairly final
What continues to irritate is that Locher has mastered the ART of SLOW MOTION. Already with progress impeded by a TMS mandate to have the Sunday strip as a REPITITION of Monday to Friday. The man crawls on the belly in move things forward.
He needs a visit to the Tool Shed !

Actually the Sunday has been a recap of the dailies for pretty much the whole history of the strip, so that papers can get by with one or the other.
But the thing with Locher’s writing is, you could get your paper delivered every third Tuesday and not miss anything.
