Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

No, they want something from him, if they wanted him dead, he would be. Surely they cannot be such lousy shots as to aim at him and hit the trapeze artist.

Ringo seems to have a different face in panels 1 and 2. Remarkable, I say.

Urgh. Please tell me they do not print this in newspapers? Surely this is part of the reason that the comic strips are struggling.

WATCH THIS SPACE ON OCTOBER 4, 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!
For what? Beats me and I really don’t care at this point because NOTHING can save the strip at this point. Locher has done irreparable damage.

October 4 must be the day that the “action” moves out of the center ring.

I’m less expectant about hearing that something new happens on Ostober 4. Perhaps, it’s to say that Locher is “retiring” again (a diplomatic phrasing to say he’s finally fired - and this time for keeps)
In the meantime, every strip I read looks like some thing I read yesterday or last week. It’s like Locher fell asleep at the wheel with fingers typing the same sentences.?
Readers will easily renember, “It happened”. Yes, it happened before.

October 4, 2009 a new artist and story editor take over the strip. Well, one can hope.

Is it October 4th yet? At least SOMETHING might happen on that date. I have no doubt nothing will happen plot-wise until then.

The way things are going with this strip, Oct 4th should happen about Nov 28th.

Dick Tracy can’t make up his mind. Yesterday he told Ringo he wanted to know the background of every performer. Now today, Tracy starts peppering him with more questions. Make up your mind!!!!

The strip is not irreparably damaged…that’s part of the problem, every day I read it I think it could be SO much better. I still remember when Collins and Fletcher took over from Gould, and the new energy and direction were apparent. I never cared overmuch for Locher’s art, but with Collins writing the strip remained entertaining. Why Locher was tapped to write it is beyond me, I can only guess the decision was made by suits solely considering the bottom line and not understanding that writing takes talent and discipline.

Since they’re not having much success building suspense in the strip, they must’ve gotten one of their lackeys to leave these Oct 4 teasers to get everyone excited. Unfortunately, the repetitiveness is so reminiscent of “It happened. It happened” that I’m sick of it already.

A once proud comic strip… Chet G. must be spinning. I’m old enough to remember Flat Top, Prune Face, and Gravel Gertie as a bad gal.

Of course someone wants you dead, Ringo – that’s why he keeps sending you ransom notes. That’s what people do when they want you dead; they send you ransom notes.
On October 4th the newly elected Governor of Moon Valley will take office and fly the Space Coupe to Earth and land it on the circus tent, killing many of the people inside – but I’m not saying just who will be killed – not yet.

If a new artist/writer takes over DT ON 10/04/09 then i’ll believe 12/21/12….

Knowing MPH as I do, on October 4th, he’ll find a way to moon all of us. If he swallowed, and actually got to do the strip, I have no doubt that a huge moon will appear across the strip and there are a lot of Magpies who will know who it’s meant for! Maybe Judy can get a hint of what he has up his sleeve.

H’mmmmm….maybe she can. I’m thinking that Matthew will possibly be taking over drawing the strip. You mentioned he’s a good artist, and having checked out his work myself I have to agree. Matthew isn’t even dropping hints, though, so I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
