Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

So who is laughing? Now Tracy wants a knife fight?

LOL, WW! Tracy’d be fun to watch in a knife fight……or not.

Cutting? Is Spacy gonna make his own death threat note?

Ringo’s arms are too short to reach the note. Does anyone know what “get cutting” means? Maybe Cutting is the name of a forensics expert? Dr. Cutting. Yeah, that’s it.
avatarjk137 said, 3 months ago
Cutting refers to the fact that Tracy will quietly shank all the suspects, just to be sure.
The person delivering the note is one of the carnival freaks - obviously, a blind one.
Dirk_Gently said, 3 months ago
Obviously Tracy is the culprit and is about to make the next note to send to Ringo. He’ll be quite safe though as Tracy won’t be able to work it out and catch himself.
Fearless_Fosdick said, 3 months ago
Ringo, please take this note and write something nice. It is for Louise’s funeral flowers.
LudwigVonDrake said, 3 months ago
Why does Ringo continually turn his back to Tracy and spread his arms out? He keeps doing it…STOP!

“LET’S GET CUTTING” ?
Same thing I said yesterday ! Glad you agree !
Lets cut out and DUMP all the August strips that in effect say the SAME THING every day, every day, every day !
They only serve to give Locher “thinking-time” to decide what will happpen next in the story. A little slow “dim-witted” stuff here. Imagine, a whole month to decide (?)
It’s monsterous, monotenous REPETITION and dumber than Locher hugging Barb Els (who we will see again tomorrow).
As the man said – “this is no laughing matter”!
On target ! I wish Dick Locher would take his home-spun “homilies” seriously. in doing the strip

“Could Tracy’s twin also be Ringo’s twin, constantly switching back and forth between the two disguises?”

In Panel 1 the fellow with the short arms is impersonating Ringo. In Panel 3 is that Ringo or Tracy? We can’t see his arms. How can we tell??? He looks like Tracy, but the note bringer calls him Ringo….
Have we ever seen both Ringo and Tracy with short arms in the same panel???

What country are we in and what dialect are they speaking? “There’s a rub” … “Let’s get cutting” … it’s English, but those are not American idioms. Somewhere in Africa? Or the dialogue is being translated from some other language into English, leaving the foreign idioms intact.

Maybe he means, let’s make cutting remarks? He must not be reading the comments; we already do!
Stuart Gathman said, 3 months ago
You guys are missing the point. Tracy is so depressed over the situation (“no laughing matter”), he wants to begin “cutting” - cutting himself with a knife as an expression of emotional desperation.
HectorPriam said, 3 months ago
Macy’s full name is Dickyobi Macymoto and cutting refers to ritual suicide (Hara-Kiri) or Harry Carey.

What they should really do is call Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy. This is starting to look like an old ‘Scooby-Doo’ plot.

What would ever make him think that?

I have given up on pointing out the many inadequacies on this strip and now am singularly focused on returning Dick Tracy to the moon, the setting of the last period in which this strip was mired in pointless stupidity (though still better written and drawn).

You want a circus? Try “Under The Big Top”! Every day’s a circus with those clowns! Trust me!

Tracy is ready to CUT.
Watch the big Dick strut
The other Dick who drew this stuff
Has been using too much puff

Ringo said, “If our performers won’t put on a show…I have no show!”
OMG!! This guy is a brilliant businessman to be able to draw that conclusion so quickly!
Somebody that shrewd will keep the show going by charging admission for the crowds to watch the workers pull up the tent pegs and eat the leftover concession food!
Joe Allen Doty said, 3 months ago
The “note” for Dick Tracy is probably like the one that the circus owner received earlier and telling him to stay out of the case.
whardin1960 said, 3 months ago
A circus came to our town and charged people to watch the elephants help raise the tent. Must’ve been Ringo and the gang.

Do all the characters have Angelorious Disease?
Was the “CUTTING” a reference to the “cut-and-paste” are the team deploys with laughable results?
Should have been “Let’s CUT-AND-PASTE this adventure! Who is with me, Mr Morphing RIngo/Ringmaster/old/young/ponytail/no ponytail/mustache/no mustache guy!”
HE WHO CONTROLS CUT AND PASTE CONTROLS THE WORLD!

I did a quick google of the idiom “cutting”. I came up with:
“Cutting the cackle”
“Cutting your losses”
“Cutting edge”
“Cutting to the chase”
“Cutting the mustard”
“Cutting your teeth”
Which apply? Which don’t? Discuss.

My Mom always used the the expression, “Let’s get cuttin’”. It meant ‘Hurry it up!’.

DT seems delirious today. Although I am not a medical doctor, I have seen enough snickers commercials to be able to identify a case of hunger when I see one. It seems that skipping that pizza and only having a little bit of popcorn is affecting DT’s vision, hearing, motor skills, lucidity, mojo, personal odor, balance, and sexual orientation. I recommend snickers.

When I was kid my family was so poor that all we could afford was Daryl’s Circus. He featured giant midgets (some nearly 6’0” tall), bearded men, and headless chickens running around.
The 10 cent admission saved us a lot of money!

All seem to apply aptly to Dick Locher except “cutting edge”
Note also that the staunch Defenders and their alter egos have all dissapeared, as fast as Teevo ! . The weight of the embarrassment is too great..

Cutting: Slicing into the ice with the double edged blades of hockey skates
Its a great day for hockey, as usual.
A.
I was sent to a ‘cutting’ way back when I was a rookie. When I arrived, the husband complained that they were arguing and his wife was ‘cuttin’ on him. We asked to see his injuries, and he said she was only cuttin on him, as in ‘insulting’ him.
True anecdote.
