Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

Tess is talking about the strip in panel #2….

Panel 3: Please, Spacy, leave your private life out of this!

Popcorn! Getcher popcorn here! Lemonade! Peanuts! Cotton Candy!
SPLAT!
(ulp) Uh, never mind…

The second word balloon in panel one has to be Bonnie. I can see her dead-eyed vacant smile as she describes the accident as “bad.”
Panel 2: Alright, Dick. Mind telling us where you need one? Who’s hurt, and how? That sort of thing?
Panel 3: Let me through! I’m a Detective, so obviously I’m just as necessary as a doctor to save people’s lives!
Maxine, I’ll take some cotton candy. Keep it and the popcorn away from Locher, though - this story’s fluffed out enough as is, with all the recaps and redundancies.

Meanwhile, the funny dead duck is sneaking out a back flap of the tent…

Look at panel one. Even the ARTIST is criticizing this story. ‘Terrible’ indeed.
Fearless_Fosdick said, 3 months ago
I think there is some confusion. They were calling out her name. The woman who fell is Awful Terrible. She is part of the circus family, “The Flying Terribles”. Her mom is Loucka Terrible, and her father, Ismell.

The art in the third panel is a mess. I can also draw circles to simulate people plus Tracy doesn’t look like himself.

Dick and family must have had some pretty awful nose-bleed seats for the audience members below them to appear THAT small.

It switched to a hockey tent that quickly?
At least the goalie didn’t break a sweat if she missed the net.
The ambulance is for the yyyguy ref who got hit by the puck.
She needs to work on her slap shot accuracy to at least add some slap stick comedy to this Tracy plot.
(Due to lack of seriousness, the role of Dick Tracy is being played by Mark Johnson today It’s a Miracle!)

Can anyone find any panel in the Half-and-Half story where ANY tent at ANY time had “circus” written on it? Every day we are reminded they are AT THE CIRCUS.
If there are so many readers of the strip, why is it written as if someone will only read it once or twice a month?

Dick looks like he’s flying on down to the center ring. Maybe he’s jumped on the trapeez.
idarke said, 3 months ago
So why does the circus have a net, if it’s not under the trapeze artists? Did the clown gun blow her across the tent? Do they just roll it out if someone looks like they’re falling?
jtpozenel said, 3 months ago
Amazing! The trapeze artist’s fall didn’t last more than 2 days?
kab2rb said, 3 months ago
At least with a comic strip could last longer :(. Another crime for DT.

On the plus side, the aerial view of the circus tent is well drawn, even if it is a bit superfluous. As for the line “Oh! A bad accident!” , well is there any other kind of accident? I mean “Bad accident” does sound kind of redundant. I still like Dick Tracy, no mattter how stupid it gets. ( Maybe something’s wrong with me.)

A trapeze artist misses the net? And Macy jumps up, zips up from the popcorn gag, and hustles down to center ring? What law was broken now? Isn’t he jumping the gun a little?
RichardT said, 3 months ago
Most of the conversation in panel 1 seems to be coming from the trailers behind the tent. That’s helpful. I like to know that someone, somewhere considers something terrible. The traffic? The view from all the way out there? Something he/she ate?

The way Tess insisted that they go to the circus on the exact day of this tragic incident seems… suspect.

Today I officially give up on Dick Tracy as it is now presented by the present team. Despite the reduced frame a better artist could draw DT on a head of a pin if need be. The stories have been just ridiculous and getting worse. I will be returning to the recently published reprint series for my daily DT fix. The rest of you remain loyal as long as you can but you’ll know how I feel when eventually your patience has run out. Good luck and farewell to you all. See you in Brenda and GA.

” I’m going down there , Tess ! ”
Why ?
What will you do in the ring ?
I am sure that there are a lot of people in the circus that can help the poor lady .
… sorry , Dick , you’re the best(est) detective in the whole world !!!

I wonder if the “dumbing down” of Dick Tracy has anything to do with the Warren Beatty suit…

Sounds like you’re giving Locher too much credit there “Stru”
But then, he is a “natural” !
BrozMan with all his woes deserves some credit. Today, is the first time in twenty + years that I’ve seen Tracy use the Wrist Geenee in a panel and in the next, it’s still ON his wrist
