Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

I had the impression before that Mr Ringo was the chief villain of the piece, but today he seems like a hesitant underling.
That Locher- what a tease! He tells us locks are there for a purpose, then doesn’t even explain what it is!

margueritem says :
“What color are Tracy’s eyes? Bonnie and Tess have blue eyes.
Can’t tell they are slated and flinty-eyed today but see his jacket. Do I see “blue” and Grok’s favorite cross hatching ?
I’m convinced Locher is still doing penciling. The Louise Trapeeze grin shouts “Locher” !
What worries me is, that this story may be one of Locher’s “mystery” tales. Really a “code” word for - take a vaccation on Villain design. So we won’t find out WHO “did it”, or see the Rogue until near story end, and for convenience it will be someone in disguise. Perhaps the Clown or another who’s face is Circus obscured.
Same techhnique was used in the J.Kindly Goodfellow tale (2004), where ALL we saw throughout the tale was a “hand with a ring”, then at the end, an inconspicious looking “dead-fellow” on the floor. .
Dodging, “Tricky Dicky’s” of the trade ? Not unlike “paste up” panels.

When Bonnie reminded Dick of the many surprises at the circus, Dick did his homework and is working on one now. Gotta get the popcorn box half empty, though! No wonder Bonnie likes the circus so much!

To all those who make their ‘constructive’ criticisms (you know who are):
Yes, you all make some valid comments, and your witty remarks are for the most part appreciated.
However, until I see you write, draw, and construct your own daily comic strip (remember, the key word is ‘comic’) then none of your comments can carry any real weight.

Good gosh.
jd, do you happen to be a professional comic book website reader-comments-author? Until you are, then none of your criticism of our comments can carry any real weight.

Yeah really—JD, as Samuel Johnson put it, “You don’t have to know how to build a table to tell when one is badly made.”
Nuff said.

Is the Safeway remark a slam against people who work or shop there? With the way today’s economy is, you’re pretty lucky to have a job flipping burgers compared to what the 11% of America’s total population, facing unemployment, foreclosures, and life savings greedily taking away by investors who swear you will make more money by staying with them…
Enough about my rantings on the country. Nothing wrong with the opinions shared on here. I believe that is why the First Amendment was created for this country, so we have the freedom to shoot off our mouths without any form of repercussion. The story seems to be free falling quicker then the lady is in the last panel. I’ll agree with anyone who says that. The artwork seems to be consistent in this story then most, but it will take more then a net to save this free falling story…

Actually, the whole quote is, “There are always fun and surprises here, Dad”. I hate to admit it, but DL is correct in using “are”, since the sentence contains two subjects.

From yesterday, Safeway674 said:
“The best way for those who don’t like the Dick Tracy strip, is to quit having it emailed to them or logging onto it. The more hits the web page is getting, the more the writers are believing their doing a good job.”
In a sense, Safeway has a point. By coming here to make fun of such a horribly done strip, we’re contributing to ad revenue, which gives TM more reason to continue carrying it.
On the other hand, one would think that TM would be embarrassed to continue carrying a strip that continually receives nothing but negative comments. And, if Locher and Brozman were to actually come here and read the comments, they would certainly know that they’re not doing a good job.
A few days ago, someone posted a link to a classic Dick Tracy archive from the ‘60’s. Yeah, the whole going-to-the-moon thing was hokey, but that was common for most science fiction writers of that era. (Examples: Ray Bradbury with his “Martian Chronicles”, and Robert Heinlein with his short story about colonizing Venus.) The science fiction aspect aside, though, the quality of writing and artwork is orders of magnitude better than what Locher and Brozman are giving us now.

So what we are looking at is a switcheroo? Shoot the trapeze lady and then have a replacement ready on the ground to take her place and make it all look like it’s an act? One on the ground and one in the air?

DonnieTevault: It’s a very awkward sentence. It could have been written as: There are always surprises and lots of fun…..
Fun is singular, surprises is plural, and the sentence as written is awkward. I’m not an English major, so perhaps someone that is could give us an opinion.

jd, your comment is so illogical and stupid I won’t even bother to respond directly to it, especially since it’s been so well pointed out by others.
I really come here for the snark, not the strip itself. Dick Tracy was one of my favorites as a child (I even had a Dick Tracy lunchbox), but it has clearly fallen on hard times. Maybe Locher and/or Brozman are wonderful guys, maybe they’re talented, but the work they are doing here is NOT of good quality.

Should have just left out the “and.”
“There are always fun surprises here, Dad.”
I like that panel too, with Bonnie’s head surrounded by her parents head. I liked the scary elephant, I like the sexy Louise Trapeze and I even like stick figures in the last panel. This story is growing on me. At least it seems better than the last story arc.
I think a lot of us are here for the same reason as Radams36. We have a fondness for Dick Tracy from our past. So we gather here to bemoan the state of the current product. Misery enjoys company.

Let’s criticize constructively!
Louse Trapeze looks anatomically accurate and even attractive, except that her left thumb is longer than any of her fingers (surely a minor detail) and she seems to have had mastectomy surgery between panel 5 and 6 (but maybe she didn’t, maybe it’s only that her falsie slipped out of place early in her plunge).
I vote for more attractive and anatomically accurate dames – preferably even more anatomically accurate, complete with a full set of mammaries and thumbs, but this is a step in the right direction! Unfortunately she seems to be plunging to her doom, but we’ll probably have plenty of time to examine her more thoroughly on her way down….

8.29 am MONDAY …
– And around a Studio in Naperville two weary Praetorian Guards (and their alter egos) lower their shields and one breaths a deep “SIGH” of relief.
No attacks or downloads this morning !
margueritum, The Tracy “blue eyes” are shown on Sunday, May 24.
Brine’s comment above on “still in the air”– points out the Writer’s stubborn insistence to sail the Strip forward in the Doldrums with his Anchor still down.
You really have to wonder what happens when nature calls (?)
