Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, began drawing his most legendary character, the dashing and daring Dick Tracy for the newspaper comics page in 1931. Modeled in the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that took Dick Tracy to the moon (both literally and figuratively).
Although many remember him with fond nostalgia, Dick Tracy, now written and illustrated by Dick Locher, continues to be relevant as he combines old-fashioned values with 21st century innovation to capture corporate crooks, computer pirates, polluters, skyjackers, gang members and terrorists.

It’s possible she wasn’t shot, but her partner was, making him fail to grab her.
If anyone was shot, will anyone wonder if a clown who fired a gun at exactly that time had something to do with it?

Correction Bonnie, there IS a “dead duck” it’s the trapeze woman.

That’s an improbably large amount of dialog to squeeze into the time it takes a body to fall fifty feet.

“That’s not a duck, that’s a woman!”
HankF said, 4 months ago
Safeway, I agree with you. Insensitive remarks should not be here.
puddleglum1066 said, 4 months ago
She’ll be OK. Given the amount of dialog that’s gone by since she let go of the trapeze, she’s not so much falling as floating gently down like a feather.
Maybe that’s the surprise for tomorrow’s strip…

That must have been one powerful gunshot… it appears to have knocked off the gloves that trapeze chick was wearing yesterday.
kab2rb said, 4 months ago
Don’t trapeze for circus use netting to catch falls? Part of safety? I went to a circus years ago there was netting then and someone did miss the catche and fall.

Hank, where is Safeway’s comment? Maybe Safeway had a change of heart. Or, maybe it was deleted. Anyway, I’m heading over to Maxine’s for some popcorn. The fall will take 3 weeks and 2 Sundays. (If Clarabell didn’t like the trapeze chick, wouldn’t it be better to shoot her without a tentfull of witnesses?)

There is a net. Not big enough and in the wrong place, but there is a net. (See panel 2, bottom right)

Hey Morrow…I think I’ll join you over at Maxine’s (maybe she’ll have lemonade too!!) Tomorrow will be a recap of the week…then MAYBE we’ll get back to the action Monday…
jtpozenel said, 4 months ago
Let’s keep count of the days before impact (not counting today or Sundays which are the weekly recap.) Any bets on how many days?
LudwigVonDrake said, 4 months ago
Hey Morrow, can I join you guys for popcorn too? This story could take a while. I’m thinking this could finish up around Christmas.
Josh 1360 said, 4 months ago
What I was about to write also. That this “investigation” will
last all the way into christmas.

It’s the SUDDEN STOP at the end.

You’re not taking into account how many times she bounces. Of course she’ll bounce better if she hits the net.

jtpozenel put me down for 22 days before impact. Was going to have it go over a month, but we’ll probably see something tomorrow.

Just great. The makings of another totally unrealistic, poorly thought through story.
Really, what kind of writer would set up a murder that takes place before hundreds of witnesses? And, of course, Dick will go “rogue”, and solve the case without any hint of police procedure.
I have to agree that this once-great strip is in desperate need of a new writer.

How high is a circus trapeze? 100 feet? Even with a generous allowance for air resistance surely less than 3 seconds to fall. Four sentences in less than 3 seconds … so far … I have a feeling they’re not done talking yet …

Hank F - Thanks for your comments.
Grokenstein does not get it.
The comment page is mean’t for constructive criticism
His agenda, along with many others that you see on this
page everyday is to be as negative as possible.
If you find the Dick Tracy comic so sub-standard, why do you continue to read it everyday and comment about it?.
channce said, 4 months ago
safeway674, get your head out of your asspirations. We are giving constructive criticism. Get a decent writer on this strip. Are you the only one who is allowed to define constructive criticism? The comment section is obviously for saying anything at all, judging by the various comment sections of the various comics, or haven’t you bothered to read any of them other than DT. We entertain each other in this manner and thus add value to a strip that otherwise would likely have as few followers as the strip seems to have in print. And please don’t use the word “Dick” anymore because there are likely those who will be offended by the insensitive slang reference to a certain part of their anatomy.

II’m afraid “channce” has me choking with laughter. Not that I fail to respect other peoples problems but because humorous phrasing and comment are the main reasons posters come to this board.
The strip and it’s contradictions are the vehicle for this and I’d bet half of those here are here just for that purpose.
In a way it’s a purge for the frustrations we feel nearly every day, from an Author who needs a pink slip, for the current strip, that was once the best in America !
safeway674 said, 4 months ago
The best way for those who don’t like the Dick Tracy strip, is to quit having it emailed to them or logging onto it. The more hits the web page is getting, the more the writers are believing their doing a good job.
Maxine_Viller said, 3 months ago
Safeway, if we follow your advice, TMS might end the strip. But most of us don’t want the strip to end – we just want to see some improved art and much improved writing. That’s why the comments posted here each day are (mostly) negative.
It may never happen, but we’re trying to let TMS know that while we want the strip to continue, most of us don’t like the way it has been for such a long, long time. It isn’t that we deserve better – it’s the strip itself that deserves better.

Let’s criticize constructively!
Louse Trapeze looks anatomically accurate and even attractive, except that her left thumb is longer than any of her fingers (surely a minor detail) and she seems to have had mastectomy surgery between panel 5 and 6 (but maybe she didn’t, maybe it’s only that her falsie slipped out of place early in her plunge).
I vote for more attractive and anatomically accurate dames – preferably even more anatomically accurate, complete with a full set of mammaries and thumbs, but this is a step in the right direction! Unfortunately I fear she is plunging to her doom, but we’ll probably have plenty of time to examine her more thoroughly on her way down….
